3M Considers Major Business Unit Divestment in Strategic Overhaul

Industrial conglomerate 3M is reportedly evaluating one of the most significant portfolio restructuring moves in its recent history. According to Bloomberg sources, the multinational technology company is exploring the potential sale of several industrial business units worth billions of dollars – a strategic maneuver that could fundamentally reshape the corporation’s future direction.

Financial Performance Shows Strength Amid Strategic Review

Market observers are maintaining a positive outlook on 3M despite the ongoing strategic evaluation. The company’s recent financial results have provided grounds for optimism, with second-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share reaching $2.16, surpassing market expectations. This strong performance prompted management to raise full-year guidance to a range of $7.75 to $8.00 per share.

Analyst sentiment remains constructive, with Weiss Ratings recently reaffirming its “Buy (B-)” assessment. The consensus among market researchers positions 3M at an “Overweight” rating, accompanied by an average price target of approximately $165, indicating moderate upside potential from current trading levels.

Goldman Sachs Advisory Role Signals Serious Intent

The company has engaged investment bank Goldman Sachs to assess potential divestitures of underperforming business segments, signaling the seriousness of these strategic considerations. While no final decisions have been made, and 3M could ultimately maintain its current corporate structure, the appointment of a premier financial advisor demonstrates substantive progress in the evaluation process.

The potential divestment targets include substantial operations within 3M’s safety and industrial division, which generated approximately $11 billion in revenue during the previous fiscal year. This portfolio encompasses diverse product lines including aftermarket automotive components, industrial adhesives, and personal protective equipment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying 3M?

Transformation Accelerates Following Legal Challenges

This potential portfolio optimization represents the latest phase in 3M’s comprehensive transformation journey. The manufacturer has faced substantial legal headwinds in recent years, particularly concerning PFAS chemical liabilities. Market participants viewed the May 2025 settlement of New Jersey claims, which resulted in a $285 million tax charge, as a positive development toward reducing legal uncertainties.

The current strategic review aligns with management’s stated objective of shedding non-core and low-growth segments to strengthen the overall business portfolio. By potentially divesting slower-growing units, 3M could reallocate both capital and executive focus toward more promising growth areas, emphasizing increased agility and profitability.

Upcoming Earnings Report to Provide Critical Insights

Attention now turns to October 21, when 3M is scheduled to release third-quarter 2025 financial results. The subsequent conference call is anticipated to offer not only detailed performance metrics but potentially preliminary insights regarding the progress of the portfolio review.

The coming weeks will determine whether the industrial giant proceeds with the separation of billion-dollar business units, potentially accelerating its transformation trajectory. Market participants await clarity on how 3M will execute this strategic repositioning and how equity markets will respond to the company’s restructuring initiatives.
