Reinsurance of America: A Strategic Standout in a Hard Market

While a surge in natural catastrophe losses has created a challenging environment, the reinsurance sector is posting unexpectedly strong profits. In this seemingly contradictory climate, Reinsurance of America is demonstrating a shrewd strategic position. Despite a recent earnings miss, the company’s long-term prospects are being validated by significant institutional investment and a transformative new deal.

A Hard Market Drives Sector-Wide Strength

The broader industry is currently experiencing a period of unprecedented discipline. Since January 2023, a persistent “hard market” has taken hold, characterized by stricter insurance terms and more favorable conditions for reinsurance providers. This strategic shift is delivering tangible results. The average non-IFRS 17 combined ratio for the sector showed remarkable improvement, falling from 100.9 at the end of 2022 to an impressive 89.1 by the close of 2024.

This performance is particularly notable given the record-breaking nature of 2024, which saw natural catastrophe losses exceed $140 billion. A series of hurricanes in the U.S. Southeast and severe weather events across the globe pushed claims to historic highs, yet the industry’s profitability remained robust.

Institutional Confidence Defies Quarterly Results

Major institutional investors are maintaining their conviction in the reinsurer’s strategy. In a significant show of faith, Dimensional Fund Advisors substantially increased its stake during the first quarter, building a position now valued at over $180 million.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Reinsurance of America?

This vote of confidence comes even as the company’s second-quarter earnings fell short of analyst projections. The company reported earnings per share (EPS) of $4.72, which was $0.86 below forecasts. Quarterly revenue of $5.60 billion also slightly missed expectations, which were set at $5.70 billion.

Management, however, is signaling a different narrative. The decision to raise the quarterly dividend from $0.89 to $0.93 per share speaks clearly to the board’s belief in strong future cash flows, despite any near-term headwinds.

Transformative $32 Billion Deal Positions for Growth

Beyond market cycles, Reinsurance of America is pursuing deliberate, strategic growth. The company’s recent $32 billion transaction with Equitable Holdings, finalized in July 2025, is being viewed as a potential game-changer.

The deal is projected to contribute approximately $70 million to the company’s adjusted operating income still in 2025. Looking further ahead, contributions are forecast to reach between $160 and $170 million for 2026, with a long-term annual run-rate of up to $200 million. This agreement substantially diversifies the company’s revenue streams and highlights management’s aptitude for executing growth-oriented decisions within a complex landscape. In an industry receiving a positive outlook from AM Best, this strategic move could ideally position Reinsurance of America for its next chapter of expansion.
