Cisco Systems has unveiled a series of strategic artificial intelligence initiatives, signaling the networking giant’s determined push into the lucrative AI infrastructure sector. The announcements, made during the recent Splunk .conf25 event, centered on new products designed to help enterprises leverage machine data for AI applications. This raises a critical question for investors: can Cisco truly compete with established AI industry leaders?

Deepening the NVIDIA Alliance

A significant development in Cisco’s AI roadmap is the expansion of its Secure AI Factory solution through its ongoing partnership with NVIDIA. The enhanced collaboration focuses on accelerating retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, potentially reducing latency from minutes to seconds. This advancement aims to provide AI agents with faster and more secure data access capabilities, addressing a key performance barrier in enterprise AI implementations.

Unified Data Architecture Emerges

At the core of Cisco’s announcement is the introduction of Cisco Data Fabric, an architecture built upon technology from its acquired Splunk platform. This solution targets the dual challenges of complexity and cost in big data management, seeking to make vast information reserves more accessible for AI training and custom model development. For corporate users, this could transform proprietary data—from sensor readings to application logs—into tangible competitive advantages.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Cisco?

Breaking Down Data Barriers

In another strategic move, Cisco introduced Splunk Federated Search for Snowflake, creating integration between operational data from Splunk and business information housed in the Snowflake AI Data Cloud. This interoperability addresses a pervasive corporate challenge: fragmented data ecosystems that obstruct valuable insights. The solution enables seamless unification and querying of previously siloed information sources.

Pivoting Toward Platform Strategy

These developments represent one of Cisco’s most significant strategic shifts since completing its Splunk acquisition. The company is deliberately repositioning itself beyond its traditional hardware vendor identity toward becoming a comprehensive enterprise AI infrastructure platform. This focus on unifying networking capabilities, security protocols, and observability functions may prove to be a strategically astute repositioning in the evolving technology landscape.

The true test, however, remains ahead. Market observers will closely monitor adoption rates for these new solutions and whether they translate into meaningful revenue growth. Upcoming quarterly results in November may provide initial indicators regarding whether Cisco’s AI offensive represents substantive progress or merely ambitious positioning.
