Shares of MP Materials, the Western Hemisphere’s leading producer of rare earth elements, surged 8.1% in a single trading session. The rally was fueled by a significant analyst upgrade and growing market optimism surrounding government backing for producers of critical minerals. Trading volume was notably heavy, reaching 169% of the daily average. The stock hit an intraday high of $82.23 before settling to close at $76.98.

Analyst Optimism and Strategic Positioning

The primary catalyst for the upward move was a bullish research note from investment bank Jefferies. The firm not only reaffirmed its “Buy” rating but also raised its price target substantially, from $85 to $90 per share. Analysts highlighted the company’s strategic value as a potential “national champion,” a position strengthened by its vertical integration strategy and growth prospects in international investments and recycling capabilities.

Market sentiment received an additional boost from reports suggesting the Trump administration is considering strategic stakes in U.S. companies involved in critical battery materials. This potential “halo effect” amplified the positive perception of MP Materials’ existing relationship with the U.S. Department of Defense. The upbeat mood was further supported by an upgrade to “Strong Buy” from Daiwa America.

Pentagon Investment as a Cornerstone

A pivotal development for MP Materials occurred in July 2025, when it secured a landmark public-private partnership with the Pentagon. The U.S. Department of Defense invested $400 million, becoming the company’s largest shareholder.

This foundational agreement provides crucial financial security through several key provisions:
– A 10-year price guarantee of $110 per kilogram for its neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) products
– A decade-long offtake agreement for magnets produced at the planned “10X” facility
– These government-backed commitments are complemented by commercial contracts with major partners like General Motors and Apple

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MP Materials?

By de-risking its expansion plans, this partnership has significantly bolstered investor confidence, contributing to a dramatic rise in the stock’s value over the course of the year.

Operational Execution in Focus

With its strategic partnerships firmly in place, market attention is now centered on the company’s operational execution. The next significant financial update is anticipated on November 5. The consensus on Wall Street remains positive, with the majority of analysts maintaining “Buy” or “Strong Buy” ratings.

Currently, the Mountain Pass facility is operating at approximately 50% of its target throughput rate. Management anticipates reaching the annual production goal of roughly 6,000 tonnes of NdPr oxide within the next four to six quarters through incremental operational improvements. The timeline for commercial magnet production remains on track to commence by the end of 2025, with initial sales expected in early 2026.

Jefferies analysts project that MP Materials will continue to secure one to two new offtake agreements with original equipment manufacturers each quarter. As the company builds out its fully domestic, end-to-end supply chain, its performance stands as a key barometer for U.S. efforts to achieve independence in the critical rare earths sector.
