Occidental Petroleum Nears Major $10 Billion Divestment in Strategic Shift

Occidental Petroleum could be on the verge of a transformative $10 billion transaction. Reports indicate the energy giant is nearing the sale of its chemical subsidiary, OxyChem—a strategic maneuver designed to substantially reduce its debt load and reposition its equity. This potential mega-deal raises a critical question for investors: Is it the catalyst needed to reverse the stock’s multi-month downward trajectory?

Accelerated Debt Reduction Strategy

The prospective divestiture of OxyChem represents a significant acceleration of Occidental’s ongoing commitment to strengthen its balance sheet. Following the contentious CrownRock acquisition, the company has already surpassed its initial debt reduction goals. To date, it has retired $7.5 billion in debt, far exceeding the original target of $4.5 billion. A successful $10 billion sale would elevate these efforts to a new level, creating substantial financial flexibility for strategic reinvestment.

This year has seen Occidental actively streamline its portfolio. Since the start of the quarter, the company has announced asset sales totaling $950 million, with transactions worth $370 million already finalized. The OxyChem deal would be the crowning achievement of this broader divestment strategy, resulting in a leaner, more focused corporate structure.

Sharpened Focus on Core and Emerging Ventures

The planned sale underscores a deliberate strategic pivot. Occidental is intensifying its focus on its foundational oil and gas exploration business while simultaneously advancing its ambitious low-carbon initiatives. Through its subsidiary, 1PointFive, the company is aggressively developing Direct Air Capture technology. This push has been bolstered by multi-billion dollar acquisitions, including Carbon Engineering, and through forming key partnerships with major industry players.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Occidental Petroleum?

The corporate objective is clear and ambitious: Occidental aims to generate 30 percent of its revenue from low-carbon ventures by 2030. The capital infusion from an OxyChem sale could provide the precise financial resources required to hasten this energy transition while concurrently reinforcing its conventional oil and gas operations.

A Potential Inflection Point for the Stock

Market participants are watching closely, as this development could signal a long-awaited reversal for Occidental shares. The stock has declined more than 16% since the beginning of the year and continues to trade significantly below its 52-week peak. Current analyst sentiment largely clusters around a “Hold” rating, with an average price target of $54.70. However, a confirmed OxyChem transaction would likely prompt a comprehensive reassessment of these positions.

All eyes are now on the upcoming quarterly earnings report, due at the end of October. The pivotal issue for investors is whether this multi-billion dollar deal can do more than just fortify the balance sheet—specifically, whether it can sustainably rebuild market confidence in the company’s long-term growth narrative.
