Shares of Japanese Bitcoin pioneer Metaplanet experienced a sharp 4.99% decline on Friday, closing at 533 yen. The sell-off occurred immediately following regulatory filings revealing that global investment firm Capital Group has accumulated an 11.45% stake, establishing itself as the company’s largest shareholder.

During the trading session, Metaplanet shares fluctuated between 532 and 564 yen, representing a significant retreat from Thursday’s closing price of 561 yen. The market reaction appears counterintuitive given Capital Group’s substantial investment, valued at approximately $500 million, which typically signals institutional confidence.

The timing of this ownership change proves particularly noteworthy. Just last week, Metaplanet substantially expanded its Bitcoin treasury, acquiring an additional 5,419 BTC. This brings their total holdings to 25,555 BTC, valued at nearly $3 billion, with an average purchase price of $106,065 per Bitcoin.
