AMD Shares Face Pressure as AI Optimism Falters

The semiconductor sector is experiencing tremors as initial enthusiasm for artificial intelligence technologies shows signs of weakening. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), despite reporting impressive financial results, finds its stock under significant selling pressure. Market participants are divided on whether this represents a temporary market correction or indicates broader concerns about AI sector valuations.

Strong Fundamentals Meet Market Skepticism

AMD’s recent financial performance tells a story of robust growth. The company’s third-quarter 2025 results revealed a 36% revenue increase to $9.246 billion, with earnings per share exceeding expectations at $1.20. The data center segment expanded by 22%, while the client and gaming divisions surged an impressive 73%.

During its November 11 Financial Analyst Day, management outlined ambitious targets including annual revenue growth exceeding 35% and earnings per share surpassing $20. The company is positioning itself to capture opportunities in the lucrative $1 trillion computing market, though investors are now scrutinizing these aspirations more carefully.

Analyst Community Expresses Diverging Views

Market experts are offering conflicting perspectives on AMD’s prospects. Investment firm Rothschild & Co. Redburn has raised concerns about the economic viability of the generative AI boom. According to analyst Alex Haissl, GPU installations require six times more capital to achieve comparable cloud returns than established technologies.

Despite these concerns, the consensus price target among analysts remains at $273.49, suggesting nearly 19% upside potential. The analyst community shows considerable support with 28 maintaining buy recommendations versus only three advising caution. This division reflects the broader uncertainty currently affecting the AI sector.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMD?

Technical and Competitive Challenges Emerge

From a technical perspective, AMD’s stock chart shows concerning signals. The share price has broken below its 50-day moving average and is approaching the critical 200-day line. Continued selling pressure could potentially push the stock below the psychologically important $200 threshold.

The competitive landscape is also intensifying. A significant partnership announced September 18 between Intel and NVIDIA threatens AMD’s expansion plans in the AI processor market. While AMD has its own collaboration with OpenAI, investors are increasingly questioning the profitability of this arrangement.

Valuation Concerns Surface

Trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 79.28, AMD shares continue to price in substantial future growth. The current pullback raises fundamental questions about whether this represents a healthy pause following the stock’s remarkable 68% annual gain or signals the beginning of a broader reassessment of AI sector valuations.

Institutional investors appear divided in their approach. While Forge First Asset Management has increased its position, other major shareholders have reduced their exposure. With only 24% of fund managers currently holding AMD shares, potential for additional buying exists should market uncertainty diminish.

The coming trading sessions will determine whether AMD has found a bottom or if the current decline represents merely the initial phase of a more significant adjustment.
