XRP Plunges to New Low Despite Landmark ETF Approval

Investors who anticipated a major rally following the regulatory green light for XRP exchange-traded funds are facing a harsh reality. Contrary to widespread expectations, the launch of these long-awaited investment vehicles has triggered a significant sell-off, sending the cryptocurrency’s value downward. The critical question market participants are now asking is whether this represents a typical “sell the news” event or signals a more fundamental shift as long-term holders exit their positions.

Price Action Contradicts Bullish Fundamentals

The substantial price decline appears particularly puzzling given the overwhelmingly positive regulatory developments. The protracted legal battle between Ripple and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has effectively concluded. Both parties dropped their appeals in August 2025, with the civil penalty finalized at $125 million, providing the market with much-needed regulatory certainty.

Under the leadership of new SEC Chair Paul Atkins, whose approach favors innovation, XRP has achieved full integration into the mainstream U.S. financial system. The digital asset now officially holds non-security status for retail sales—a regulatory position that many competing projects aspire to but have not attained.

Institutional Demand Meets Overwhelming Selling Pressure

The trading debut of the Bitwise XRP ETF on the New York Stock Exchange represented a historic achievement for the cryptocurrency sector. Institutional interest proved immediately substantial, with the product recording net inflows exceeding $100 million alongside impressive trading volume. Additional offerings, including the ETF from Canary Capital, also registered inflows, pushing total assets under management for U.S. spot XRP ETFs toward the $400 million mark.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

However, this institutional accumulation has collided with determined selling. Blockchain data indicates that this scenario aligns perfectly with a “sell the news” pattern. Long-term investors, some of whom have held positions since the 2018 and 2021 market cycles, appear to be utilizing the fresh liquidity provided by ETFs to realize profits.

Technical Indicators Paint Bearish Picture

Despite these fundamentally positive developments, market technicals tell a different story. Intense selling pressure has severely impacted XRP, driving its value down by more than 16% over the past week. The asset currently trades at $1.95, establishing a new 52-week low.

While the severely oversold condition, reflected in an RSI reading of 28.8, suggests the downward move may be overextended, bearish momentum currently dominates price action.

Market Outlook

The financial infrastructure supporting XRP’s long-term growth is now firmly established, marking its entry into a new era of Wall Street accessibility through regulated products. In the immediate term, however, the market is characterized by the capitulation of frustrated retail investors contrasted against the strategic accumulation by institutional players. The pivotal issue now becomes determining when the selling pressure from established holders will finally exhaust itself.
