ASML Shares Surge to Unprecedented Peak Amid Sector Uncertainty

While many semiconductor stocks face headwinds, ASML Holding NV continues to defy broader industry uncertainty. The Dutch lithography specialist has powered to fresh all-time highs, fueled by a wave of bullish analyst commentary and a substantial share repurchase program. Notably, even news of potential future competition, backed by U.S. funding, has failed to dampen investor enthusiasm for the stock.

Management Confidence Manifested in Buyback Program

In a strong signal of internal confidence, ASML’s management executed a significant buyback between November 24 and 28. The company repurchased 205,580 of its own shares at a weighted average price ranging from €848 to €900, representing a total investment of approximately €180.85 million.

This move underscores the leadership’s view that the equity was attractively valued even before its recent surge past €960. The repurchases form part of a broader capital return initiative, simultaneously supporting the share price and highlighting the executive team’s conviction in the firm’s long-term growth trajectory.

Analyst Community Rallies with Consecutive Upgrades

The buying pressure received substantial validation from Wall Street in early December. Within a 48-hour span between December 2 and 3, three major financial institutions issued upgraded assessments.

JPMorgan raised its price target to $1,275 from $1,175 and added ASML to its selective “Analyst Focus List,” a move closely watched by institutional investors. Morgan Stanley designated the company as its European “Top Pick,” setting a target of €1,000. Mizuho Securities reaffirmed its “Buy” rating with a $1,275 target.

The consensus thesis among researchers is that the semiconductor cycle, particularly for AI-driven logic chips, is far from its peak. Trading activity reflected this optimism, with volume on some platforms spiking 25% above the daily average.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Asml?

Potential Competition Fails to Stir Concern

On December 2, reports emerged that the U.S. administration is considering an investment of up to $150 million in xLight, a startup led by former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger. The venture aims to develop an energy-efficient free-electron laser technology as a potential alternative to ASML’s extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography.

While theoretically a competitive threat, the market reaction was muted. Analysts point out that the proposed funding is minimal compared to ASML’s annual R&D budget and the decades of technological development embedded in its EUV systems. Investors appear confident that ASML’s entrenched monopoly in high-end lithography remains secure for the foreseeable future, with its technological moat intact.

Valuation and Technical Perspective

With a market capitalization exceeding €363 billion, ASML ranks among Europe’s most valuable companies. Its shares have appreciated more than 58% year-to-date, a remarkable performance given volatile market conditions.

The valuation is undemanding, with a forward P/E ratio hovering around 39-40, which necessitates flawless execution. The market, however, continues to award this premium due to ASML’s indispensable role in the AI supply chain. Every leading chipmaker aiming to produce cutting-edge semiconductors is reliant on its technology.

From a chart perspective, the stock has decisively broken through previous resistance near €900 and is approaching the key psychological €1,000 level. The 50-day moving average, sitting well below the current price, now acts as dynamic support. A sustained hold above €970 this week would technically confirm the breakout, driven predominantly by institutional demand.

Investors will next scrutinize the quarterly report scheduled for March 4, 2026. That update will provide critical insights into the payoff from recent strategic investments—such as the €1.3 billion stake in Mistral AI—and the ongoing strength of demand for EUV systems.
