Cullen/Frost Bankers capped off its 2025 fiscal year with a significant jump in profitability, setting the stage for an ambitious branch network expansion. As numerous regional banks navigate a complex environment, this Texas-based institution is doubling down on a strategy of organic growth. The key question for investors is whether this physical expansion can continue to fuel performance in the current year.

A Robust Close to the Year

The company recently released its fourth-quarter figures, rounding out a solid year. Net income available to common shareholders reached $164.6 million for the quarter, marking a 7.4% increase from the same period last year. On a per-share basis, diluted earnings came in at $2.56, an 8.5% year-over-year gain.

The bank’s performance was bolstered by strength in its core operations. Net interest income proved to be a particular pillar, rising 8.6% in Q4 to $471.2 million. Furthermore, non-interest income also saw healthy growth, advancing by 7.6%. Cullen/Frost demonstrated robust operational health with a return on average equity of 14.80%.

Capital Deployment: Rewarding Shareholders and Investing in Growth

Management is leveraging this financial strength to benefit stakeholders while funding future growth. Shareholders will receive a steady quarterly dividend of $1.00 per share, payable on March 13 (ex-date: February 27). In a significant move underscoring board confidence, the company has also authorized a new share repurchase program worth $300 million, effective through January 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Cullen/Frost Bankers?

Concurrently, the bank is executing a clear geographic growth strategy within its core Texas market. Following the opening of ten new financial centers in 2025 across key areas including Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio, the pace is set to continue. Plans are already in place to open between 12 and 15 additional locations in 2026. This focus is yielding results, as evidenced by a 4.9% increase in average commercial loan volumes.

Financial Highlights and 2026 Guidance

  • Full-Year 2025 Net Income: $641.9 million (an 11.5% increase year-over-year)
  • Q4 2025 Dividend: $1.00 per share
  • Share Repurchases: New $300 million program authorized
  • Branch Network: 12 to 15 new openings planned for 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, Cullen/Frost Bankers has provided guidance anticipating a continuation of its positive trajectory. The company forecasts loan growth in the range of 5% to 7%, with deposits expected to grow at a more moderate 2% to 3%. Net interest income is projected to increase by 3% to 5%.

A key metric, the net interest margin, is anticipated to improve by 5 to 10 basis points from its 2024 level of 3.66%. Growth in non-interest income is estimated to be between 4% and 5% for the coming year.
