Amazon’s Heavy Investment Phase Weighs on Share Performance

Amazon finds itself at a strategic crossroads, underscored by two divergent announcements this week. While its cloud division unveiled a major artificial intelligence partnership, its drone delivery unit publicly severed ties with an industry group. These moves reflect a company aggressively pursuing growth, a strategy that is currently pressuring its financials and, consequently, its stock price.

Analyst Confidence Amid Market Skepticism

Despite a year-to-date share price decline of approximately seven percent—lagging the relatively stable S&P 500—analyst sentiment remains overwhelmingly positive. A full 92% of covering analysts maintain a “buy” rating, with a median price target of $285. Their optimism hinges on Amazon’s valuation and the belief that its massive capacity expansion will accelerate growth in the medium term. Projections suggest annual revenue growth of 12.2% between 2025 and 2028, which would push annual sales beyond the trillion-dollar threshold.

The core challenge for investors, however, is the timeline for returns. Amazon’s free cash flow over a trailing twelve-month period plummeted to $11.2 billion from $38.2 billion, primarily due to a $50.7 billion surge in capital expenditures. For 2026, the company plans capital investments nearing $200 billion. Although fourth-quarter operating income improved to $25.0 billion from $21.2 billion a year earlier, this progress is overshadowed for many by the sheer scale of ongoing investment.

Strategic AI Move Challenges NVIDIA

In a direct challenge to NVIDIA’s dominance, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced an exclusive collaboration with AI chip specialist Cerebras Systems. The partnership aims to provide what the companies claim are the fastest available AI inference solutions for generative AI applications and large language models. AWS becomes the first cloud provider to offer Cerebras’s disaggregated inference solution via Amazon Bedrock.

This architecture splits the inference process into two stages: AWS Trainium servers handle pre-processing, while Cerebras CS-3 systems manage output generation, connected via Amazon’s Elastic Fabric Adapter network. A planned upgrade is expected to quintuple the capacity for rapid token processing without increasing the physical hardware footprint. AWS positions this solution as a GPU-cluster alternative, promising a tenfold speed increase for real-time AI generation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

Cerebras brings established credibility to the venture, currently processing up to 3,000 tokens per second for clients like OpenAI, Meta, and Cognition. The company recently closed a Series H funding round worth $1 billion, valuing it at $23 billion ahead of a potential public listing later this year.

Drone Division Exits Alliance Over Safety

In a separate development, Amazon’s Prime Air drone unit has withdrawn from the Commercial Drone Alliance. According to a letter seen by Reuters, the division cited irreconcilable differences with the alliance’s stance on safety regulations. The specific point of contention is the group’s opposition to a proposed Federal Aviation Administration rule that would mandate collision avoidance systems for drones.

Prime Air defended its safety record, referencing over 70,000 flight tests during which its proprietary system reportedly prevented two potential collisions with manned aircraft. This departure highlights Amazon’s willingness to chart an independent regulatory course for its ambitious delivery projects.

The Bottom Line for 2026

Market concerns currently center on Amazon’s loss of cloud market share, tariff impacts on e-commerce, and investor apprehension over the magnitude of AI spending. The pivotal question for Amazon’s valuation in 2026 will be whether, and when, these multibillion-dollar investments begin to translate into sustained, tangible cash flow.
