A significant update to the methodology governing a major US-focused sustainable ETF has sharpened its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. The iShares MSCI USA ESG Enhanced UCITS ETF USD Acc, a portfolio with over $25.62 billion in assets under management, has refined its investment strategy to place greater emphasis on corporate emissions targets and stricter sustainability filters.
This shift results from recent changes to its underlying index, the MSCI USA ESG Enhanced CTB Index. Effective from early March, the index’s calculations for greenhouse gas intensity and its optimization requirements were modified. These adjustments were implemented specifically to meet the rigorous standards set by the European Union’s Climate Transition Benchmark (CTB) regulations.
A Low-Cost, Direct Approach to US Markets
The fund employs a physical replication strategy to track its benchmark, meaning it holds the actual constituent stocks within its portfolio. Its 483 current positions provide investors with broad exposure to the US equity market. The strategy maintains a firm exclusionary policy, systematically omitting companies involved in controversial business activities or with significant ties to fossil fuels.
With a total expense ratio (TER) of just 0.07%, this ETF remains one of the most cost-efficient vehicles available for gaining sustainable exposure to US companies. Recent performance data highlights sustained investor interest in this segment; as of March 11, the index had posted a one-year gain of 2%.
The update effectively re-calibrates the selection process for the more than 480 companies held within the fund, offering investors a portfolio realigned with evolving climate-focused standards.
