Health regulators and courts across the UK, US, and India have stepped up enforcement this week, handing out significant fines, shutting down businesses, and issuing public alerts over allergen risks and hygiene failures.

UK Courts Crack Down on Hygiene and Allergen Offences

British food businesses have faced serious legal consequences following inspections that uncovered severe sanitary risks and mislabelling.

On July 30, 2026, a Birmingham court fined the operator of Taste of Sichuan, also known as PinChuan, £12,000 plus costs. Prosecutors presented a dossier of 144 photographs documenting a mouse infestation, with droppings found near prawns, alongside evidence of a leaking pipe and unsanitary cooking equipment.

The same day, the operator of BME United Heritage, a stall in the Bullring Indoor Market, was found guilty of six charges and ordered to pay over £3,000 in fines and costs. The case followed an earlier inspection that found mouse droppings on seasonal confectionery, plus mouldy produce and expired seafood on sale.

In Durham, a restaurant called Isla was fined more than £8,000 after serving cappuccinos marketed as dairy-free that contained milk protein. The case underscores the legal weight of allergen accountability for hospitality providers — a growing concern for UK food businesses under food-safety regulations.

Infrastructure-related closures also hit the sector in late July. A court confirmed a hygiene emergency prohibition for Veggie Fellas, a vegetarian pizzeria in Walsall, on July 29, 2026, after environmental health officers discovered an active mouse infestation. In Leicester, the pub Four Four One announced a permanent closure following a June inspection that resulted in a zero-hygiene rating due to rat activity and structural gaps.

US Alerts Over Undeclared Allergens and Labeling Gaps

Across the Atlantic, the US Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on July 29, 2026, over Red’s Steak Cilantro and Lime Burritos. The frozen products, shipped to Costco locations in Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota, contain undeclared egg allergens.

The affected items were produced on June 19, 2026, in 3-lb. 2-oz. cartons containing 10 burritos. A formal recall was not initiated because the products are no longer available for purchase, but officials warned that consumers may still have them in their freezers. The lot codes involved range from L1 SD6170 1503 to L1 SD6170 2130.

Legislative efforts are also targeting broader labelling standards. Representative Anna Paulina Luna has introduced an amendment to the FASTER Act of 2026 that would require the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to include barley, rye, and oats alongside wheat in major allergen labelling. The bill proposes redefining “wheat” as “gluten-containing grain” to better protect consumers with gluten intolerances and coeliac disease.

India Reports Thousands of Substandard Food Samples

In India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) released data for the 2025-26 fiscal year showing that of 223,808 food samples analysed, 40,023 were non-conforming with safety standards. While the agency has decided over 31,000 civil cases with penalties, criminal convictions were recorded for only 1,918 instances. To improve surveillance, FSSAI has deployed 305 mobile testing labs across 35 states and union territories.

With regulators worldwide tightening enforcement, UK businesses face similar scrutiny over their safety documentation. Regional enforcement has also intensified. In Rajkot, municipal authorities sealed three food processing units on July 31, 2026. One facility, Kesar Food Products, was found using animal feed flour in products intended for human consumption, leading to the destruction of over 1,000 kilograms of goods. Other units were closed for lacking technical staff or failing to maintain batch records for spices and essences.

In a related judicial development, the Bombay High Court has questioned the consistency of the FDA’s enforcement measures. The court noted discrepancies where some establishments received immediate suspensions while others were given improvement notices despite cleanliness concerns, emphasising that the FDA must maintain a fair and uniform standard across all inspections, including those of public canteens and private clubs.
