The market’s verdict on Figma’s latest earnings was swift and unforgiving, with the design software maker’s stock shedding more than 15 percent in Thursday trading. The sell-off came despite a second-quarter performance that comfortably beat analyst expectations on both the top and bottom lines, underscoring just how uneasy investors have grown over the company’s escalating artificial intelligence spending.

Shares were changing hands at €20.20 by Thursday afternoon, extending the stock’s year-to-date decline to roughly 37.6 percent. The sharp drop followed Tuesday evening’s release of quarterly results that showed revenue surging 48 percent year over year to $370.1 million — comfortably ahead of the $352 million consensus forecast. Adjusted earnings per share of $0.08 also came in double the $0.04 analysts had penciled in.

The Cost of the AI Bet

The headline growth figures, however, masked a widening hole in the company’s finances. Figma reported a GAAP operating loss of $117.3 million for the quarter, a stark reversal from the $2 million operating profit it posted in the same period a year earlier. The deterioration stems largely from a doubling of research and development spending tied to artificial intelligence, with stock-based compensation ballooning to $147.6 million from just $7.3 million in the prior-year quarter. Free cash flow margin also compressed, sliding to 14 percent from 24 percent.

Management confirmed that the quarter marked the first full period of monetizing AI credits, and early adoption metrics suggest the strategy is gaining traction. More than 80 percent of customers generating annual recurring revenue above $10,000 are now using these features on a weekly basis. The company’s customer base is also expanding: accounts with ARR over $10,000 grew 34 percent year over year to 15,964, while those exceeding $100,000 in ARR rose 46 percent to 1,635. Net dollar retention held steady at a healthy 136 percent.

Guidance Raised, Profit Outlook Unchanged

Despite the operational momentum, Figma’s forward guidance struck a cautious chord. Management lifted its full-year 2026 revenue forecast by $40 million to a range of $1.463 billion to $1.467 billion, implying growth of around 39 percent. The company also guided third-quarter revenue to between $373 million and $375 million. Yet the adjusted operating income target for the year remained frozen at $125 million to $135 million, a decision the company attributes to continued investment in AI infrastructure.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Figma?

That gap between revenue optimism and profit restraint has given analysts pause. Bank of America strategists acknowledged that AI monetization appears to be progressing well but cautioned that the stock could remain under pressure until the company offers greater transparency around the precise revenue contributions from these initiatives.

C-Suite Shakeup and Founder’s Sacrifice

Adding to the turbulence, Figma announced a sweeping reshuffle of its executive ranks alongside the financial results. Chief Product Officer Yuhki Yamashita and Chief Marketing Officer Sheila Vashee are both departing, with Vashee handing over her duties to Nairi Hourdajian at the end of August. Chief Technology Officer Kris Rasmussen will transition into the role of Chief Architect as the company begins its search for a new CTO.

In a gesture aimed at signaling long-term commitment, CEO Dylan Field has opted to forgo stock awards valued at approximately $46 million, a decision that follows the recent decline in the company’s share price. The move comes as insider activity has drawn attention: CFO Praveer Melwani sold 381,288 shares worth roughly $9.58 million in late July under a pre-arranged trading plan, while General Counsel Brendan Mulligan also trimmed his stake. Chief Accounting Officer Tyler Herb disposed of 1,536 shares on August 3 through a similar plan, and additional shares were withheld from the CFO and sales chief to cover tax obligations on vested employee awards.

Wall Street’s Mixed Signals

The analyst community had struck a largely positive tone heading into the print. Goldman Sachs reaffirmed its buy rating on August 1 with a $30 price target, citing Figma’s leadership in collaborative design. Citigroup had maintained its “Buy” stance in late July while trimming its target modestly from $36 to $35.

The disconnect between those bullish calls and the market’s reaction highlights a fundamental tension: investors clearly recognize Figma’s growth story, but they are unwilling to underwrite the cost of the AI transformation without clearer evidence of the payoff. With the stock down more than a third since the start of the year, the burden of proof now rests squarely on management to demonstrate that the spending spree will eventually translate into meaningful margin expansion.
