Neo Performance’s Rare Metals Bonanza Creates a Curious Divergence Between Fundamentals and Share Price

The arithmetic of Neo Performance Materials’ latest earnings release tells a story of extraordinary operational momentum. The Toronto-headquartered specialty metals group posted adjusted EBITDA of $57.03 million for the second quarter of 2026 — more than triple the year-earlier figure — on revenue of $205.75 million, a 79.4 percent surge. Net income landed at $17.46 million, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 27.7 percent and adjusted earnings per share of $0.51.

The engine behind those numbers is the Rare Metals segment, which contributed $44.41 million in adjusted EBITDA. Management pointed to record prices for hafnium, gallium and tantalum — critical inputs for electronics and advanced manufacturing where supply has grown increasingly constrained. Strong capacity utilization combined with tight availability pushed segment margins sharply higher, and the company now guides to full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA in a range of $140 million to $150 million, with Reuters reporting that management expects to reach the upper end of that band.

The Market’s Mixed Response

Yet the share price response to what the company itself described as its strongest quarter on record has been notably subdued. The stock closed Friday at €22.90, roughly a quarter below its 52-week high of €30.50 — a level it touched only on the day results were released. The pullback extends to a 12 percent decline over seven days and 13 percent over the past month, suggesting a meaningful portion of the good news had already been priced in ahead of the print.

That short-term weakness, however, sits against a backdrop of extraordinary longer-term gains. The shares remain up 137 percent since the start of the year and 119 percent over twelve months, trading well above their 200-day moving average of €16.00. The annualized 30-day volatility of 83 percent underscores just how jittery the market has become around the stock.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Neo Performance?

Analyst Targets Move Higher

The sell-side response has been decidedly more enthusiastic than the tape suggests. Stifel Nicolaus lifted its price target on August 12 from C$49 to C$55, reaffirming a buy rating. BMO Capital Markets went further, raising its target to C$60, while ATB Cormark settled at C$53.50. The cluster of upward revisions within days of the earnings release signals broad recognition of the company’s fundamental momentum, even as short-term trading tells a different story.

Strategic Progress and Shareholder Returns

Beyond the headline numbers, the company reaffirmed its quarterly dividend of C$0.10 per share, declared on August 6 and payable September 28 to shareholders of record on September 18 — a signal that the capital return policy remains intact despite the investment push in rare metals. Management also flagged strategic advances in its permanent magnet business, with two to three customer programs at its European facility expected to transition into commercial production by year-end.

The central question for investors now hinges on sustainability: whether record pricing for hafnium, gallium and tantalum can persist beyond the current cycle, and whether the gap between operational strength and share price performance will eventually close. The raised guidance and magnet business milestones provide the fundamental scaffolding for that convergence, but the market’s recent behavior suggests it is not yet convinced.
