Partners Group’s Mounting Maturity Wall Threatens to Overshadow a Fee-Income Bright Spot

The Zug-based private markets firm is heading into a leadership transition with a €6 billion refinancing hurdle looming on the horizon. Debt coming due across three portfolio companies — watchmaker Breitling, facility manager Emeria and conveyor-belt specialist Ammega — must be restructured by 2028, just as the group’s share price sits near multi-year lows and a short seller circles its valuation methodology.

Breitling Emerges as the Weakest Link

The pressure is most acute at Breitling, where Partners Group holds a majority stake of more than 50 percent and CVC owns 23.6 percent. Revenue at the Swiss watchmaker slid 11 percent to 769 million francs in the twelve months through March, while EBITDA tumbled 21 percent to 162 million francs. S&P responded in July by cutting its rating to B-. With debt exceeding one billion francs, the company’s last valuation of $4.5 billion from 2023 now looks increasingly difficult to defend.

The deterioration at Breitling has handed ammunition to Grizzly, a short seller publicly questioning Partners Group’s approach to valuing its holdings. Such attacks carry particular weight for private equity firms, whose entire model rests on investor confidence in internally determined asset valuations. Doubt cast on one portfolio position can quickly metastasize into broader skepticism about the whole group.

A Mixed Half-Year Scorecard

The refinancing headache lands at a delicate moment. Half-year results published last Wednesday revealed a 13 percent drop in net profit to 502 million francs, with revenue down 7 percent to 1.12 billion francs. The 2026 outlook was also trimmed.

Beneath those headline declines, however, the business tells a more nuanced story. Management income — the recurring fee stream that investors prize for its predictability — climbed 12 percent before currency effects to 905 million francs. Performance income, by contrast, contributed just 216 million francs, roughly 19 percent of total revenue, underscoring how dependent that line remains on the timing of individual exits.

The company reaffirmed its guidance that performance income should represent 20 to 25 percent of revenue for the full year, contingent on the progress of selected sales processes. Fundraising momentum also continues: Partners Group collected $16 billion in the first half, keeping it on track for its $26 to $32 billion annual target, while assets under management reached $186 billion as of June 30.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Partners Group?

Asian Mandate and a Completed Exit

On the deployment side, the firm secured a $1 billion mandate from an Asian institutional investor for private credit investments across the Asia-Pacific region. The brief covers both senior and junior direct lending, encompassing discretionary capital as well as co-investments — the kind of mandate that feeds the more stable management income stream.

The exit pipeline, meanwhile, saw the completion of Partners Group’s departure from Gong cha, the Taiwanese bubble-tea chain. Bain Capital acquired the business, allowing Partners Group to monetize a position that began in 2019 with a $200 million investment alongside TA Associates’ original acquisition financing, plus additional equity contributions. Completed transactions of this sort flow directly into the performance income line and will determine whether the annual target is met.

Market Skepticism Runs Deep

Investors have yet to be convinced. The stock shed 7 percent on results day and has continued to drift. At 723.80 euros, the shares have lost 9.2 percent in just the past seven trading sessions and sit roughly 32 percent below their January peak of 1,187.50 euros — a 52-week high that now feels distant. The gap to the 200-day moving average of 916.07 euros stands at over 21 percent, a telling measure of how badly the medium-term trend has deteriorated.

A Leadership Handover Under Duress

The refinancing test will fall to a new generation of leadership. David Layton is set to become CIO, while Roberto Cagnati and Juri Jenkner are slated to take over as co-CEOs from 2027, subject to FINMA approval. They inherit a firm where the credibility of valuation models is under active assault and where the 2028 maturity wall at Breitling, Emeria and Ammega will serve as a live stress test of those models.

Whether the group can refinance its portfolio companies’ debt on workable terms before those deadlines arrive remains the central question for shareholders. Until then, the debate over valuation practices looks set to keep weighing on the share price, even as the fee-generating engine of the business continues to hum.
