Thyssenkrupp’s Steel Bet: A London Showdown Looms Behind the Share Price Surge

The arithmetic is striking: a 62 percent gain since January, a 20 percent jump in just 30 trading days, and a fresh 52-week high touched on Friday. Thyssenkrupp’s equity has become one of Europe’s most electric turnaround stories — yet the hard questions about whether the rally rests on substance or anticipation will only be answered next month in London.

Shares in the Essen-based conglomerate climbed 6.2 percent on Friday to settle just shy of €15.30, a whisker below the twelve-month peak they had briefly pierced earlier in the session. The catalyst was a Deutsche Bank research note lifting the price target from €16 to €18 while reaffirming a “Buy” rating. Analyst Bastian Synagowitz pointed to the European Union’s tightened trade defence measures for the steel sector, arguing that while demand for the metal remains soft, pricing could surprise to the upside as import restrictions bite.

The German bank applied the same logic to ArcelorMittal the same day, raising that target from €66 to €71 with a matching “Buy” call — a sign that the re-rating of European steel equities is broadening rather than remaining stock-specific.

A structural tailwind from the Ruhr

Friday’s move did not occur in a vacuum. A day earlier, ArcelorMittal had halted steel production at its Duisburg site, a decision that reshapes the competitive landscape in Europe’s steel heartland and, at least indirectly, strengthens Thyssenkrupp’s hand. That development followed an upgraded earnings forecast from Thyssenkrupp itself roughly three weeks prior, when management lifted its full-year adjusted EBIT guidance to €600–900 million from a previous €500–900 million range.

The third-quarter numbers behind that revision tell a story of genuine operational improvement. Revenue climbed 8 percent to €8.79 billion, adjusted EBIT advanced 18 percent to €183 million, and the group returned to positive net income of €34 million — a sharp swing from the €255 million loss recorded in the same quarter a year earlier. The caveat: €131 million of that profit came from the sale of HKM stakes to Salzgitter AG, a one-off that flatters the underlying picture. Management still projects a net loss of €400–700 million for the full fiscal year.

Analysts line up ahead of the event

Deutsche Bank is not alone in warming to the stock. The DZ Bank lifted its stance from Hold to Buy on August 21, raising its target from €11 to €16, while Bank of America had already pushed its price objective from €19 to €22 on August 20. Both institutions signalled conviction in the operational turnaround and the regulatory environment well before Friday’s move.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Thyssenkrupp?

Investors have also taken encouragement from the planned spin-off of the materials trading division, tk accelis, which won shareholder approval at an extraordinary general meeting in August — evidence, supporters argue, that the conglomerate’s unwinding is progressing.

The Steel Europe question hangs over everything

The crux of the investment case remains the future of the steel division, Steel Europe. Talks with Jindal Steel International over a stake in the business were paused in May, officially owing to shifting market conditions and improved regulatory parameters in Europe — including the CBAM carbon border mechanism and the EU safeguard measures. The goal of making Steel Europe independent persists, but no new partner or timetable has emerged.

That vacuum makes the Capital Markets Day scheduled for September 22 in London the pivotal moment. Management has signalled the event will address precisely the questions investors are asking: the future structure of Steel Europe and its earnings potential. Until then, the market is trading on expectations rather than certainty.

Technical strains beneath the surface

The rally’s velocity has created vulnerabilities that bearish observers are quick to flag. The relative strength index sits at 68.3, approaching overbought territory, while annualised volatility of 47 percent underscores how jittery the market remains. The share price now trades 20 percent above its 50-day moving average and 43 percent above its 200-day average — deviations that historically tend to revert unless hard news arrives to justify them.

Should the London event fail to deliver concrete details on Steel Europe’s structure or timing, the disappointment could be sharp given how far expectations have run. Conversely, if the EU trade protections hold and the operational improvements continue showing up in quarterly results, the rally’s foundations look firmer than the technical indicators alone might suggest.

For now, the market has chosen to believe the narrative. The proof will come not in Frankfurt’s daily trading sessions, but in a London presentation room three weeks from now.
