Ciena’s Split Personality: Record Orders Meet Rapid-Fire Price Target Cuts

The networking equipment maker is living two lives at once. One involves a backlog that swelled by $800 million in a single quarter to $8.5 billion, earnings per share that more than tripled, and management guiding to at least 30 percent revenue growth next fiscal year. The other involves analysts slashing price targets within days of each other while the stock sits roughly 50 percent below its June peak.

That disconnect has never been more visible than this week. B.Riley Financial trimmed its price target on Ciena from $413 to $347 on Tuesday — its second cut in under two weeks, following a September 1 reduction from $516 to $413. The firm kept its Neutral rating through both adjustments. JPMorgan Chase & Co., meanwhile, lowered its own target from $635 to $605 while maintaining an Overweight stance.

The Numbers Tell a Different Story

The analyst caution arrives despite a fiscal third-quarter report that blew past expectations. Ciena posted adjusted earnings of $2.11 per share against a consensus estimate of $1.73, while revenue climbed 37 percent year over year to $1.67 billion. The adjusted operating margin came in at 22.5 percent.

Guidance was equally robust. Management lifted its fourth-quarter revenue forecast to $1.75 billion and the full-year figure to $6.42 billion. For fiscal 2027, the company is projecting revenue between $8.3 billion and $8.4 billion, implying growth of at least 30 percent.

The order book tells a similar story of momentum. Backlog expanded by $800 million quarter over quarter to $8.5 billion, fueled by demand for networking infrastructure tied to cloud and AI buildouts — the same trend that prompted NetApp to raise its outlook and saw Dell report a record $9.0 billion in AI server orders on the same day.

A Convertible Bet on Future Growth

Amid the mixed signals, Ciena moved to secure long-term, interest-free financing. The company placed a $2.5 billion zero-coupon convertible note due 2031, upsizing the original offering on the back of strong institutional demand. The structure gives Ciena cheap capital for years, though it carries the potential for shareholder dilution should the notes eventually convert into equity.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ciena?

The Valuation Reckoning

The market’s skepticism is measurable. Since the earnings report roughly three weeks ago, the stock has fallen 25.2 percent — and it has dropped 17.7 percent since a major order from e& UAE about two weeks ago. The shares closed Friday at €276.80, up 1.9 percent on the day but down 15 percent on the week and 22 percent over the past month.

Technical indicators point to a market in retreat. The stock trades about 21 percent below its 50-day moving average and roughly 15 percent under its 200-day average, suggesting the decline has built over weeks rather than days. The relative strength index sits at 33.9, flirting with oversold territory.

Valuation metrics amplify the concern. Simply Wall St flagged Ciena as overvalued over the weekend following a roughly sevenfold share price surge over three years. The stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 69.6, compared with an industry average of 33.9 and a peer group multiple of 40.9. Even a level the analysis considers fair — 47.1 — sits well below the current multiple.

Two Narratives, One Ticker

The gap between operational performance and market reception has rarely been wider. Ciena is delivering growth numbers that would be celebrated in most industries, yet the stock has given back a quarter of its value since earnings and remains about 50 percent off its early-June high of €558.40.

What makes the situation unusual is the speed of the analyst recalibration. Two firms, two sets of cuts, within days — all while the underlying business accelerates. The message appears to be that after years of AI-driven enthusiasm rewarding growth with ever-higher multiples, investors are now demanding something more: proof that the growth can justify the price already paid.

The stock sits roughly 50 percent below its 52-week high while remaining many multiples above last September’s low — a range that captures twelve months of whipsawing sentiment. For now, Ciena offers two stories at once: one of a company riding the strongest tailwind in networking infrastructure, the other of a market that has decided to wait and see whether the rally was ahead of itself.
