Partners Group’s Record Half-Year Masks a Profit Squeeze as New Co-CEOs Take the Helm

The Zug-based private markets investor closed the week at €722.40, nursing a 1.5% decline on Friday and a bruising 9.4% weekly drop that leaves the stock roughly 39% below its 52-week high of €1,187.50. Year to date, the shares have shed around 32%. The sell-off, however, tells only part of a story that is far more contradictory than the headline numbers suggest.

On the surface, the company’s first-half results, published in early September, looked like a triumph. New client commitments reached $16 billion — a record for any first semester in the firm’s three-decade history and a 31% jump on the prior-year period. Assets under management swelled to $186 billion. Yet profits tell a different tale: net income fell 13% to CHF 502 million, while revenue slipped 7% to CHF 1.12 billion.

The culprit is a sharp contraction in performance fees, which tumbled 39% to CHF 216 million. Management fees, by contrast, grew 6% to CHF 905 million, underscoring how the firm’s earnings mix is shifting toward recurring income at the expense of variable, exit-driven compensation. Management now guides for performance fees to contribute just 20–25% of total revenue this year, down from the long-term target band of 25–40%.

That recalibration explains why investors have not rewarded the fundraising momentum. In the current environment, exits have become more complex and protracted than usual, and while the pipeline remains well stocked, several processes are likely to slip into next year, as outgoing CEO David Layton acknowledged on the earnings call.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Partners Group?

The leadership transition, announced on Wednesday, had been flagged for months rather than arriving as a surprise. Layton will move into the role of chief investment officer on 1 January 2027, remaining with the firm he has led. Roberto Cagnati, formerly head of portfolio solutions and chief risk officer, and Juri Jenkner, previously president and head of business development, will take over as co-CEOs. Both have been with Partners Group since 2004. The stock has edged up just 1.1% since the announcement — a muted response given the scale of the change at the top.

The management reshuffle lands at a delicate juncture. Partners Group is navigating between two competing dynamics: robust demand for private markets strategies on the one hand, and a performance-fee drought on the other that reflects tougher conditions for mature fund vehicles. The company has already faced redemption constraints since June, when larger capital outflows prompted restrictions on withdrawals.

For the full year, management has reaffirmed its target of $26–32 billion in new client capital. Whether the incoming co-CEOs can restore investor confidence will hinge on whether the earnings structure stabilises as the year progresses — and whether the exit logjam that has weighed on performance fees begins to clear.
