Novo Nordisk’s Two-Front Battle: US Price Concessions Meet a Pipeline Fighting for Credibility

The arithmetic is brutal, and investors know it. Cutting the monthly cost of Ozempic and Wegovy from roughly $1,000 and $1,350 respectively to a flat $350 represents a reduction of about two-thirds in the price of Novo Nordisk’s two most important products in its most important market. The November agreement, which funnels the semaglutide medicines through the TrumpRx channel and also extends to Medicare and Medicaid, along with $35 monthly pricing for the insulin products NovoLog and Tresiba, puts the company’s central growth dilemma in stark relief: volume gains must now outrun significantly thinner margins.

That tension is already visible in the share price. The stock closed Friday at €40.09, down 1.8 percent on the day, leaving it 8.9 percent lower since the start of the year. The longer view is even less forgiving — a 17 percent decline over twelve months and a 27 percent gap from the 52-week high of €54.86 touched back in January. Yet the recent trading pattern tells a slightly more nuanced story: the equity managed gains of 1.8 percent on the week and 3.5 percent on the month, suggesting some buyers are willing to look past the immediate pricing pain.

The Bear Case Has a Name — and a Timeline

Deutsche Bank has become the most visible voice of skepticism. The bank downgraded Novo Nordisk to Sell from Hold in late August, trimming its price target to DKK 265 from DKK 290. Analyst Emmanuel Papadakis pointed to doubts about a return to growth in 2027, the long-term overhang of patent expirations, and the effective removal of Ziltivekimab from the development portfolio following a failed late-stage study. Notably, the bank reaffirmed its bearish stance in early September even as the shares staged a temporary rebound. J.P. Morgan sits more cautiously on the sidelines with a Hold rating.

Management, for its part, is not short of counterarguments. The pipeline continues to generate news flow: the company reported progress on an injectable obesity medicine in a pivotal Phase 3 trial and has advanced a new obesity candidate, NNC0721-8060, into first-in-human studies. In China, regulators accepted the filing for the oral version of Wegovy in late August, a move widely read as an attempt to close ground on Eli Lilly, which has already established a foothold there. Novo Nordisk has not offered a timeline for approval.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

A Capital Markets Day With Something to Prove

All of this sets the stage for September 21, when Novo Nordisk hosts its capital markets day. The event carries unusual weight. Investors will be looking for a coherent answer to questions that have accumulated over months: how the US pricing strategy translates into sustainable growth, what the pipeline prioritization looks like after the Ziltivekimab setback, and whether the China filing for oral Wegovy can evolve into a genuine commercial opportunity rather than a regulatory formality.

The company’s challenge is that the bear thesis is no longer speculative — it is anchored in observable events. The US price cuts are real, the competitive pressure from Lilly is intensifying, and the clinical setback has narrowed the pipeline’s margin for error. What remains unclear is whether the combination of oral Wegovy’s China potential, the injectable obesity program’s Phase 3 progress, and the early-stage candidate can collectively shift the narrative.

For now, the market is withholding judgment. The stock’s modest weekly gain suggests some resilience, but the year-to-date deficit and the analyst downgrades indicate that Novo Nordisk enters its capital markets day with credibility to rebuild rather than momentum to sustain. The next few weeks will reveal whether the company can convert pipeline headlines into a more durable investment case — or whether the bears, armed with pricing math and patent calendars, keep setting the terms of the debate.
