French rail transport giant Alstom has been awarded a substantial new contract to supply advanced urban mobility solutions for India. The company will provide 39 driverless Metropolis trains along with its Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling system for Mumbai Metro Line 4. The comprehensive agreement also includes a five-year maintenance commitment, with the total contract value reaching several hundred million euros.
A key aspect of this project is its alignment with India’s domestic manufacturing initiative. All rolling stock production will occur within the country, utilizing Alstom’s established industrial network. The engineering development will be handled at the company’s center in Bangalore, while train manufacturing will take place at its facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. Key components including propulsion systems will be produced in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and bogies will be manufactured in Savli, Gujarat.
