Amazon delivered a stunning quarterly performance that sent its shares surging 7% as the company’s massive artificial intelligence investments began paying dividends. While traditional e-commerce operations remained strong, the technology giant’s aggressive push into AI emerged as the primary growth catalyst, with CEO Andy Jassy describing the opportunity as “unusually large, perhaps a once-in-a-generation chance.”

Financial Metrics Exceed Projections

The e-commerce behemoth reported earnings per share of $1.43, substantially outperforming analyst expectations of $1.14. Revenue climbed 11% to reach $158.88 billion, also surpassing market forecasts.

Amazon’s operating income demonstrated remarkable improvement, jumping from $11.2 billion to $17.4 billion, indicating the success of CEO Jassy’s efficiency initiatives. Net profit showed impressive growth as well, increasing from $9.9 billion to $15.3 billion—a gain that exceeded even the most optimistic projections.

Cloud Division Regains Momentum

Amazon Web Services demonstrated renewed vigor with the cloud computing unit generating $27.5 billion in revenue, representing 19% growth compared to just 12% in the same quarter last year. The division’s operating profit expanded from $7 billion to $10.4 billion, cementing AWS’s position as Amazon’s most significant profit contributor.

Although Amazon continues to trail Microsoft Azure’s 33% and Google Cloud’s 35% growth rates, the acceleration indicates the cloud leader has moved past its recent slowdown and is reclaiming competitive ground.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

Massive Capital Commitment to Artificial Intelligence

The most striking revelation came from Amazon’s capital expenditure plans, with spending increasing 81% to $22.62 billion. Jassy outlined plans to deploy approximately $75 billion throughout the full year, with even greater investments anticipated for 2025.

“These increases are really driven by generative AI,” the chief executive explained. The substantial funding is primarily directed toward data center infrastructure and Nvidia processors to power Amazon’s artificial intelligence aspirations. Jassy characterized the situation as representing an “unusually large opportunity, potentially a once-in-a-career opening.”

Robust Cash Generation Supports Strategic Investments

Despite these substantial expenditures, Amazon continues to demonstrate impressive cash flow generation. Operating cash flow advanced 57% to $112.7 billion, while free cash flow more than doubled from $21.4 billion to $47.7 billion—clear indicators of financial strength.

These robust cash metrics provide Amazon with ample flexibility to pursue its AI initiatives without compromising profitability. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, the company expressed cautious optimism, projecting revenue between $181.5 billion and $188.5 billion.
