Amazon’s Grocery Ambitions Positioned as Next Growth Catalyst by Morgan Stanley

Morgan Stanley has designated Amazon as its premier investment selection, spotlighting an unconventional growth opportunity that extends beyond the technology sector’s typical focus. While investor attention frequently centers on Amazon Web Services (AWS), the firm’s cloud division, the investment bank identifies the company’s aggressive push into grocery delivery as the emerging catalyst poised to drive its stock performance. This strategic move places Amazon in direct competition for a share of the massive $600 billion market.

Strategic Expansion Beyond Traditional E-Commerce

The core of Morgan Stanley’s bullish outlook rests on Amazon’s operational advancements in the logistics of perishable goods. Analysts emphasize that the company has successfully engineered a system to deliver fresh groceries concurrently with its standard e-commerce parcels. This logistical achievement is considered a potential industry game-changer, leveraging several key advantages:

  • Utilization of its existing nationwide fulfillment and distribution infrastructure
  • Cost-effective same-day delivery capabilities for fresh produce and groceries
  • Access to an enormous and previously challenging target market
  • Head-to-head competition with established retail giants, including Walmart

Cloud Division Faces Scrutiny Amid Competitive Pressures

Despite the enthusiasm for its new ventures, Amazon’s established cloud business, AWS, presents a mixed picture. In Q2 2025, the division’s growth rate saw only a moderate acceleration, lagging behind the more robust expansion reported by competitors Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Although the unit’s quarterly revenue of $30.87 billion slightly surpassed expectations, its year-over-year growth disappointed some investors who had anticipated a more significant boost from the ongoing artificial intelligence boom.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

Overwhelming Analyst Confidence and Price Targets

Sentiment on Wall Street remains decidedly positive toward Amazon’s stock. An overwhelming 94% of the 70 analysts covering the company maintain buy recommendations. The consensus average price target stands at $263.20, suggesting an approximate 12% upside from current trading levels.

Adding to the optimism, Wedbush Securities continues to feature Amazon on its “Best Ideas” list. The firm specifically cited the grocery expansion as a critical differentiator, noting the company is “finally equipped to store and dispatch fresh goods for same-day delivery.”

Morgan Stanley’s upgrade reinforces a broader investment thesis: Amazon’s strategic diversification beyond its core e-commerce operations is building a foundation for its next phase of growth. The convergence of its foray into the grocery sector, its dominant position in cloud computing, and its expanding digital advertising business is creating a powerful mix of revenue streams designed to ensure long-term, sustainable expansion.
