Apple finds itself at a pivotal juncture as market experts present sharply contrasting views. Enthusiasm from some quarters, driven by projections for the iPhone 17 cycle, clashes with cautious assessments from others. Concurrently, the technology giant is navigating significant internal and external challenges, including the development of a rival to ChatGPT and addressing serious allegations concerning its supply chain.

Bullish and Bearish Sentiments Clash on iPhone 17 Prospects

The investment firm Evercore ISI made a notable move on Friday, significantly raising its price target for Apple shares to $290 from $260 and maintaining an “Outperform” rating. This optimistic adjustment stems from the firm’s consumer research, which indicated robust consumer interest in potential hardware enhancements for future devices, specifically citing upgrades to the camera, battery, and display. Interestingly, this focus marks a shift from the artificial intelligence features that generated significant excitement in 2024 back toward fundamental hardware improvements.

Bank of America Securities echoed a positive stance, reaffirming its “Buy” recommendation. Analysts there pointed to strengthened incentives from mobile carriers and the availability of extended payment plans as key factors likely to stimulate demand for the upcoming iPhone 17 series.

However, this bullish sentiment is not universal. UBS maintains a “Neutral” position, injecting a note of caution into the discourse. Their analysis of iPhone 17 availability across 30 global markets revealed a mixed picture: while wait times for the base model have extended, demand for the higher-priced Pro versions appears softer. This dynamic could potentially exert downward pressure on the average selling price, a critical metric for profitability.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Apple?

Behind the Scenes: AI Ambitions and Supply Chain Scrutiny

Amid these market debates, Apple is quietly advancing its strategic initiatives. A report from Bloomberg indicates the company is developing an internal AI application, codenamed “Veritas,” designed to test the next generation of Siri. This project, which functions similarly to ChatGPT, signals Apple’s determination to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence and not cede ground to rivals.

On a less favorable note, the company is confronting fresh concerns about its supply chain. The non-profit organization China Labor Watch has published reports detailing harsh working conditions at a Foxconn facility in Zhengzhou linked to the production of the iPhone 17. In response, Apple has dispatched teams to the site to investigate these allegations directly.

Balancing High Expectations with Operational Realities

The conflicting signals from analysts reflect a broader uncertainty regarding the strength of the current iPhone product cycle. The divergence in opinion centers on whether demand will be driven by premium hardware features, as Evercore suggests, or if a consumer shift toward more affordable models will emerge, which would challenge Apple’s industry-leading margins. Compounding these market uncertainties, Apple must also manage a class-action lawsuit related to delays in AI feature rollouts while maintaining oversight of its vast and complex global supply chain.

My name is Felix Baarz, and I look back on over fifteen years of experience as a business journalist. I have always been fascinated by the mechanisms and dynamics of global financial markets as well as the complex economic and political interconnections that shape our world. With this passion, I have made a name for myself as an expert on international financial markets and dedicate myself with great commitment to making even the most complex topics understandable and accessible to my readers. My roots lie in Cologne, where I was born and raised. Early on, my curiosity about economic topics and international developments sparked my interest in journalism. After completing my studies, I began my career as a business editor at a respected German trade publication. Here I laid the foundation for my professional career, but my curiosity soon drew me out into the wider world. A turning point in my life was moving to New York, where I lived for six years and gained insight into leading media houses. In this vibrant metropolis, I was able to report firsthand from the heart of the global financial world. From daily developments on Wall Street to major economic policy decisions that make waves worldwide, I had the opportunity to write about central topics that move people and markets alike. This time shaped my perspective and sharpened my view of global interconnections.
