Shares of British defense giant BAE Systems PLC advanced notably following the company’s announcement of a major US-backed investment to upgrade its microelectronics manufacturing capabilities. The initiative, supported by funding from the 2022 US CHIPS and Science Act, will modernize the company’s production facility in Nashua, New Hampshire, significantly enhancing output for military-grade semiconductors.

This strategic expansion is designed to accelerate delivery timelines and reduce costs for the US Department of Defense. The Nashua center specializes in producing advanced semiconductor technologies that exceed commercially available options, including six-inch Gallium Arsenide and Gallium Nitride HEMT wafer foundries. This move represents a core component of the broader US strategy to onshore the production of dual-use semiconductor technology.

The facility manufactures crucial Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs), which are essential components for advanced aircraft such as the F-35 and F-15 fighter jets. This modernization is expected to generate substantial efficiency gains within the US defense production ecosystem, bolstering next-generation aircraft programs and secure communications systems.
