Shares of Dow Inc are poised to extend their recent gains in today’s session, building on a significant 5.7% advance recorded yesterday. In pre-market trading at 8:45 a.m., the stock held steady at $28.06. Market participants are now questioning whether the chemical giant can maintain this positive momentum through its upcoming quarterly results scheduled for late January.

Market Activity and Volume Surge

The equity closed yesterday’s session at $28.06, marking a substantial single-day increase. Trading activity was notably robust, with approximately 21.15 million shares changing hands. This volume figure significantly exceeded the stock’s 30-day average, indicating heightened investor interest.

Catalysts for the Advance

Analysts attribute the recent price recovery to optimistic assessments of the U.S. plastics market, which point to rising demand from both the automotive and packaging sectors. From a technical analysis perspective, the stock successfully breached key resistance levels in mid-January and is currently trading above its short-term moving averages.

Concurrently, a series of executive appointments appear to have bolstered investor confidence. The company announced that Andre Argenton assumed the role of Chief Technology & Sustainability Officer on January 1, a move framed as an organizational streamlining that refocuses R&D efforts on sustainability objectives. The company also confirmed A.N. Sreeram’s planned retirement in June. Separately, Rebecca B. Liebert’s resignation became effective at the start of January following her appointment as Chair of Occidental Chemical.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Dow Inc?

The combination of heavy volume and upward price movement is being interpreted by the market as a reaction to improved margin expectations, supported by a stabilizing environment for raw material costs.

Broader Sector Context and Technical Outlook

Dow’s outperformance is occurring against a backdrop of mixed market signals. While broader indices face pressure from geopolitical tensions and tariff uncertainties, the materials sector is experiencing a rotation into value stocks. For Dow specifically, the current valuation may reflect early signs of a cyclical recovery, characterized by normalizing inventory levels and growing demand for more sustainable materials.

A critical date for investors is January 29, when Dow is scheduled to release its fourth-quarter 2025 financial results before the market opens. This earnings report, along with the subsequent management conference call, is expected to provide crucial insights into margin progression and initial guidance for 2026. Technically, the stock is approaching overbought territory, suggesting a period of consolidation ahead of the earnings announcement is a distinct possibility.
