Gold’s Battle for the $4,000 Milestone Intensifies

The gold market is currently navigating a period of significant volatility. Having reached a fresh all-time high in October, the precious metal now faces headwinds from a more assertive Federal Reserve and a strengthening U.S. dollar. Despite this recent pullback, the fundamental case for gold remains strong, setting the stage for a continued struggle to breach the critical $4,000 per ounce level.

Fundamental Backdrop Retains Strength

Even with the current phase of weakness, gold’s status as a safe-haven asset is supported by several powerful drivers. The World Bank continues to project elevated precious metal prices through 2026, fueled by persistent investment demand and ongoing geopolitical friction. The robust performance of the VanEck Merk Gold Trust (OUNZ), which has gained over 50% since the start of the year, underscores the metal’s sustained appeal. Three core factors underpin this positive outlook:

  • Sustained Central Bank Purchases: Institutional buying activity remains vigorous.
  • Macroeconomic Uncertainties: Inflationary pressures and geopolitical risks show no signs of abating.
  • Physical Demand: Investors continue to seek refuge in tangible assets.

Fed’s Hawkish Stance Applies Pressure

The primary catalyst for gold’s recent correction is clear: the U.S. central bank has tempered market expectations for additional interest rate cuts this year. Following the late October policy meeting, Chairman Jerome Powell signaled that the recent 25-basis-point reduction might be the final one for 2025. This unexpected shift propelled the U.S. dollar higher, placing downward pressure on gold, its traditional rival. On November 4th, the price fell by 1.7% to $3,934.77 per ounce, before staging a minor recovery to $3,941.92 by Wednesday.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying VanEck Merk Gold Trust?

The Physical Gold Advantage

A key differentiator for the VanEck Merk Gold Trust is its unique physical redemption feature. Investors have the option to exchange their shares for actual gold bars, which are held in secure London vaults. This physical delivery mechanism sets it apart from competing funds like the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) or the iShares Gold Trust (IAU). The fund’s assets are composed entirely of physical gold bars, each with a minimum purity of 99.5%. These holdings are subject to regular audits and are stored in high-security facilities.

The question now is whether gold can extend its impressive yearly gains and successfully reclaim the $4,000 threshold. The answer will largely depend on the future trajectory of Federal Reserve policy and the evolution of global uncertainties.
