A previously announced departure is now taking effect at regional lender Chemung Financial. Thomas W. Wirth, who serves as Executive Vice President, will be leaving the organization on October 1st. This move places an imminent leadership change at the helm of the bank’s profitable wealth management arm, raising questions about the future trajectory of this critical business segment.

The formal notification was recently filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, confirming Wirth’s planned retirement. He led the Wealth Management Group at the company’s subsidiary, Chemung Canal Trust Company. His exit concludes a significant chapter for a division that plays a vital role in the bank’s diversified revenue streams.

Wealth management constitutes a fundamental pillar of Chemung Financial’s business model, operating alongside its traditional lending and deposit services. The division provides tailored financial planning and portfolio management—high-value services that are central to the institution’s community banking strategy. The departure of a seasoned executive naturally prompts inquiries regarding the unit’s future strategic direction.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Chemung?

Market observers will be watching closely for announcements concerning a successor and the strategic plans for the wealth group under new leadership. The upcoming Q3 earnings report, expected in late October, will serve as a key milestone. According to analysts, earnings per share are projected to be $1.68.

The company’s stock has demonstrated resilience, having gained approximately 15% over the past twelve months. Whether this leadership transition will interrupt the positive momentum or proceed seamlessly remains to be seen.
