While numerous regional financial institutions struggle under the weight of elevated interest rates, Preferred Bank of Los Angeles is demonstrating remarkable resilience. The bank has reported surprisingly robust quarterly earnings and maintained a solid dividend, effectively navigating a complex economic landscape. The central question for investors is whether this performance is sustainable.

Impressive Quarterly Earnings Build Confidence

The foundation for the bank’s current optimism was laid by its second-quarter 2025 results. Preferred Bank reported a net income of $32.8 million, which translates to $2.52 per diluted share. This performance not only surpassed analyst expectations of $2.43 per share but also showed sequential improvement over the previous quarter.

A particularly significant metric was the expansion of the net interest margin, which increased to 3.85% from 3.75%. This improvement indicates effective management of interest rate risks at a time when many peers are experiencing margin compression.

Additional key performance indicators further reinforce the positive results:
* Total loans grew by $105.2 million, representing a 1.9% increase from the prior quarter
* Non-performing assets saw a substantial decline, falling to $51.2 million from $78.9 million
* The efficiency ratio remained strong at an excellent 31.79%

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Preferred Bank of Los Angeles?

Dividend Declaration and Strategic Capital Management

Reaffirming its commitment to returning value to shareholders, the bank’s board of directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.75 per share on September 17, 2025. This consistent distribution—payable on October 21 to shareholders of record as of October 7—highlights the institution’s financial stability and disciplined approach to capital allocation despite market challenges.

Beyond dividend payments, Preferred Bank is actively employing share repurchases as a value creation tool. Following the completion of a $150 million buyback program, the board has already authorized a new $125 million repurchase initiative. During the second quarter, the company acquired $56 million worth of its shares at an average price of approximately $80.81, signaling management’s belief that the stock may be undervalued.

Analyst Sentiment Remains Cautiously Optimistic

Despite these strong fundamental results, market experts maintain a measured outlook. The average price target of $103.67 suggests potential upside exceeding 10%, yet the consensus rating remains at “Hold.” The wide range of price targets—from $91.00 to $112.00—reflects ongoing uncertainty about how regional banks will perform within the current interest rate environment.

Preferred Bank of Los Angeles continues to demonstrate strength where many competitors are facing difficulties. Whether this exceptional performance will be sufficient to convert skeptical analysts remains the critical question for current and prospective investors.
