MP Materials, the Western Hemisphere’s largest producer of rare earth elements, commenced trading as a component of the S&P MidCap 400 index yesterday. The stock experienced significant volatility on its first day in the new index, with shares fluctuating between $69.53 and $73.29 before settling to close at $73.22.

This index inclusion, which reflects the company’s substantially increased market capitalization, is expected to generate additional investor demand. The move necessitates that institutional funds and ETFs designed to track the index now purchase the stock, potentially establishing a new, stable base of investors.

A Year of Transformative Agreements

The remarkable ascent culminating in the S&P listing is largely attributed to two major agreements secured earlier this year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MP Materials?

  • Defense Department Partnership (July 2025): A $400 million investment from the Pentagon, coupled with a 10-year supply agreement that includes a price floor for neodymium-praseodymium oxide.
  • Apple Supply Contract (August 2025): A $500 million deal to supply Apple with recycled rare earth magnets, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.

All Eyes on the Upcoming Quarterly Report

The next significant test for MP Materials arrives on November 6, when the company is scheduled to release its third-quarter financial results. This will be the first quarterly report issued since the announcement of the major contracts. Market watchers will be keenly focused on updates regarding the progress of the company’s magnet manufacturing facility in Fort Worth.

Market sentiment appears optimistic. Among analysts covering the stock, six currently recommend a “Buy” rating, while four advise investors to “Hold.” The share price has been on a notable run, trading within a 52-week range of $13.45 to $82.50, highlighting the substantial volatility and growth experienced over the past several months. The central question remains whether MP Materials can meet these heightened expectations and solidify its position as a strategic asset for the United States.
