S&P 500 Hits New Peak Amid Technical Hurdles and Sector Shifts

The S&P 500 extended its winning streak yesterday, notching a fifth consecutive session of gains and achieving a fresh all-time high. However, the advance was tempered as the index encountered significant technical resistance, capping the bullish momentum. The benchmark closed at a record 6,731.94 points but struggled to overcome a key trendline.

Macroeconomic Backdrop Provides Support

A supportive macroeconomic environment helped underpin the equity market. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note declined to 4.089%, enhancing the relative appeal of stocks. The US Dollar Index registered modest gains, settling at 97.85. Commodity markets presented a mixed picture: oil prices fell over 2% to $60.50 a barrel, while gold, benefiting from safe-haven demand linked to the US government shutdown, surged to a new record of $3,896.43.

Technology Sector Leads the Charge

Gains were largely driven by the technology sector, which continued to ride a wave of AI-driven optimism and solid quarterly earnings. The day’s standout performers included:

  • Fair Isaac Corp (FICO): Shares soared 19.63% following the announcement of a new mortgage program.
  • Coinbase Global Inc (COIN): The stock advanced 6.85%.
  • Advanced Micro Devices (AMD): Gained 4.09%.
  • Humana Inc (HUM): Rose 4.05%.

On the downside, Equifax led the decliners with an 8.01% drop, while Occidental Petroleum fell 6.71% after the sale of its chemicals business to Berkshire Hathaway.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying S&P 500?

Technical Indicators Flash Caution

Despite the record close, the rally showed clear signs of strain. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) was halted at a precise long-term ascending trendline that acted as a selling ceiling. The index traded in a range between 6,693.23 and 6,731.94, ultimately eking out a gain of just 0.06%.

From a technical perspective, the S&P 500 has pushed its daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) into overbought territory. With an RSI(14) reading above 70, this momentum indicator suggests the rally is mature. Critical resistance is now established at the 6,745 level, with a short-term pivot point sitting at 6,686.

Market Outlook: Consolidation on the Horizon?

With US markets heading into a holiday, attention turns to futures trading. Market expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts remain elevated, with a 25-basis-point reduction in October priced in with a 90% probability.

The combination of an overbought RSI and the failure to breach key resistance levels, however, points to a potential need for consolidation. The central question for traders is whether the S&P 500 can muster the strength to break through the 6,745-point barrier or if a healthy corrective pullback is imminent.
