Tech Titans Propel Nasdaq 100 to Unprecedented Heights

The Nasdaq 100 surged to a historic peak on Friday, closing at a record 24,626.25 points. This represented a substantial single-day gain of 171.36 points, or 0.70%, cementing a week of robust performance for the technology-focused index. The market’s upward trajectory continues to be fueled by the Federal Reserve’s recent interest rate cut, with heavyweight tech corporations demonstrating exceptional strength.

Momentum and Market Internals

Trading commenced at 24,528.44 points, with the index maintaining a steady upward momentum throughout the session. It showcased notable stability, oscillating between a daily peak of 24,641.93 and a low of 24,469.28.

A massive surge in trading activity was observed, with a staggering 27.78 billion shares changing hands across U.S. exchanges. This volume far exceeded the 20-day average of 17.41 billion. However, underlying this strength, market breadth told a different story. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a ratio of 1.42 to 1, indicating a degree of internal weakness. Meanwhile, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) remained subdued, suggesting the rally is progressing without sparking significant investor anxiety.

Key Drivers and Sector Performance

Specific equities were instrumental in driving the index to new records. Shares of Apple Inc. advanced by 3.2%, a move catalyzed by J.P. Morgan raising its price target for the company. Oracle Corporation delivered an even more impressive performance, leaping 4.1% to become the top performer among the index’s ten largest constituents by market capitalization.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying NASDAQ 100?

This appetite for growth-oriented assets was not confined to the Nasdaq 100. Within the broader S&P 500, technology and utility sectors also led the gains, signaling a clear ‘risk-on’ sentiment among investors.

Notable Decliners and Sector Pressure

Not every major component participated in the rally. Intel shares declined approximately 3.5%, giving back some of the substantial gains achieved the previous session following news related to Nvidia investments. The pressure extended beyond tech, with restaurant and retail chains like Darden Restaurants and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store also trading lower after releasing their quarterly earnings reports.

Technical Perspective

From a technical standpoint, the Nasdaq 100 exhibits a robust bullish trend. The index is trading decisively above its key moving averages, and its strong closing level points to sustained upward momentum. While the Relative Strength Index (RSI) reflects strong positive dynamics, some analysts caution the possibility of the index being overbought in the near term. Technical charts identify the next significant support level at 23,484 points, which aligns with the 50-period moving average.

Macroeconomic Focus and Broader Context

Looking ahead, market participants are turning their focus to upcoming economic data releases, which are expected to influence the Federal Reserve’s future policy decisions. The central bank’s recent dovish pivot remains the primary catalyst for the market’s record-breaking run. The record-setting sessions for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average provide this performance with a wider context of market strength. The trajectory of U.S. Treasury yields and the U.S. Dollar Index will be crucial to monitor; the 10-year yield saw little change on Friday, while the Dollar Index posted a moderate gain.
