TSMC Stock Surges on Dual Catalysts: Export License and Next-Gen Chip Progress

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s premier semiconductor foundry, has opened the new year with powerful momentum, propelling its shares to a record high. This surge is fueled by two simultaneous and critical announcements that have alleviated significant investor concerns: the renewal of a key U.S. export license and the confirmed on-schedule ramp-up of its most advanced chip technology.

Next-Generation 2nm Production Commences as Planned

In a major development for its technological roadmap, TSMC has confirmed the start of volume production for its 2-nanometer (N2) process technology in the fourth quarter of 2025, adhering precisely to its original timeline. This move dispels prior market speculation regarding potential delays. The new N2 node, which utilizes nanosheet transistor architecture, promises substantial gains in both performance and power efficiency compared to the current 3nm generation. This achievement solidifies TSMC’s competitive edge in the race for advanced manufacturing, a position crucial for meeting the escalating demands of artificial intelligence applications.

U.S. Grants Crucial License, Securing China Operations

Concurrently, a significant geopolitical overhang has been removed. The U.S. Department of Commerce has granted TSMC a new one-year export license for its fabrication facility in Nanjing, China. This authorization replaces the previous “Verified End User” status that was set to expire. The Nanjing plant is instrumental for manufacturing older-generation chips (16nm and larger), which are widely used in consumer electronics and automotive sectors. The absence of this license would have barred TSMC from importing American-made fabrication equipment into China, potentially disrupting production. Its renewal effectively neutralizes a primary source of operational uncertainty.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TSMC?

Sustained AI Demand Underpins Strong Outlook

The favorable company-specific news is complemented by a robust market environment. Reports indicate that key customer Nvidia has placed additional orders for its H200 chips, including versions tailored for the Chinese market, to satisfy persistent high demand. This trend signals that capacity utilization for TSMC’s advanced manufacturing nodes is expected to remain exceptionally strong through 2026.

Key Drivers Behind the Record Rally:

  • A renewed U.S. export license secures the Nanjing facility’s operations for 2026.
  • Volume production of 2nm chips has commenced on schedule.
  • Major AI clients, including Nvidia, are placing substantial follow-on orders.
  • The stock has achieved a new all-time high.

Looking Ahead

Entering 2026, TSMC is positioned from a place of strength, having addressed two major risk factors. Investor attention now turns to the quarterly earnings report scheduled for mid-January, where the market will seek detailed guidance on the anticipated revenue contribution from the new 2nm production capacity.
