Walmart’s Dual-Pronged Strategy: Domestic Discounts and African Expansion

As the crucial holiday season approaches, Walmart is executing an ambitious two-front strategy that combines aggressive domestic pricing with international market penetration. The retail behemoth faces the challenge of simultaneously defending its home turf while establishing a foothold in South Africa’s competitive retail landscape.

Holiday Price Wars Intensify

Walmart has unveiled extensive Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions featuring discounts reaching 60 percent across numerous product categories. The company is specifically targeting budget-conscious consumers with thousands of items priced under $20. This aggressive discounting strategy demonstrates Walmart’s determination to maintain its competitive edge during the critical year-end shopping period that significantly impacts annual revenue.

South African Market Entry

October 2025 marks Walmart’s strategic entry into the South African market, with its inaugural store scheduled to open in Johannesburg’s Clearwater Mall. The physical retail presence will be complemented by a localized e-commerce platform. Industry specialist Andy Higgins characterizes this move as a “challenging endeavor” for the American retail giant, though he acknowledges the potential benefits to South Africa’s retail ecosystem. Market success will largely depend on Walmart’s ability to navigate the region’s complex supply chain and distribution networks.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Walmart?

Labor Practices Under Scrutiny

Recent reports have highlighted ongoing discussions regarding Walmart’s employment practices. As America’s largest private employer with 1.6 million non-unionized workers, the corporation faces ongoing debate about public wage subsidies. The continuing conversation around employee compensation and potential unionization efforts presents a long-term consideration that could affect operational costs and subsequently influence investor sentiment.

The effectiveness of Walmart’s simultaneous domestic discount offensive and international expansion strategy will become clearer when the company releases its next quarterly results on November 20. Market observers will be watching closely to determine whether this dual approach can deliver sustainable growth.
