Moody’s Trillion-Dollar Warning and Bitcoin’s Broken Safe-Haven Bet

Dear readers,

Yesterday we closed on a note of cautious relief: while the Magnificent Seven shed nearly $800 billion in a single Thursday session, Bitcoin held its ground and kept pulling in fresh ETF inflows — for once, the boring, stable corner of the portfolio. That story didn’t survive the weekend. Friday’s session brought Bitcoin ETF outflows of more than $225 million, pulling the token back toward $64,000. The decoupling thesis we flagged looks less like a new regime and more like a temporary reprieve.

Crypto Rejoins the Risk-Off Trade

The premise that digital assets had found a lane independent of Big Tech’s earnings calendar always needed a stress test, and it got one. A single session of $225 million in outflows isn’t a collapse, but it’s a clear signal that crypto is still tethered to the same risk appetite driving equities — when investors pull back from expensive tech, they’re pulling back from Bitcoin too. Memory chip makers caught a similar wave of profit-taking, even as supply chains for AI infrastructure remain about as tight as they’ve ever been. The message across both markets: nobody wants to be the one still holding a re-rating candidate when the music stops.

Moody’s Puts a Number on the AI Buildout

The rating agency’s warning landed with more weight than a typical analyst note: AI capital spending by the major hyperscalers could approach $1 trillion by 2027, a figure that is starting to reshape how credit markets view the sector. This isn’t an abstract concern. Tesla and Alphabet both used their second-quarter reports to lay out exactly how much bigger this spending is about to get — Tesla now guiding for capex above $25 billion for full-year 2026, and Alphabet lifting its own forecast to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion. Numbers of that size don’t just squeeze margins; they raise the question Moody’s is now asking out loud — who can service this debt burden before the payoff arrives, and who’s simply betting that it will.

The Bill for Tesla and Alphabet’s Pivot

Thursday’s numbers explain why that question suddenly feels urgent. Tesla missed badly, posting 33 cents a share against a 53-cent consensus, while its operating margin collapsed to 1.4% from 4.1% a year earlier. Capital expenditures jumped 142% to $5.8 billion as Elon Musk pushes deeper into robotaxis and the Optimus humanoid program, driving free cash flow to negative $1.09 billion and the stock down roughly 14.5%. Alphabet’s version of the same story was less dramatic but no less telling: capex doubled year over year to $44.9 billion, free cash flow slipped to negative $5.9 billion, and the stock suffered its worst trading day since May 2025, down more than 7%. Two very different companies, one identical verdict from investors — the AI vision is no longer enough on its own; they want to see the payback schedule.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Tesla?

Oil Cools, Rates Don’t

There was at least one piece of relief by Friday’s close: Brent crude eased to just below $96 a barrel, a step back from the geopolitical spike earlier in the week. But JPMorgan isn’t ready to call the danger over, warning that sustained disruption in the Middle East could still push the monthly average as high as $114. That lingering inflation risk is exactly what’s keeping the bond market on edge — the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to an 18-month high, and the market’s implied odds of a Fed rate hike next week kept climbing too, from just 13% a week ago through yesterday’s 36% to nearly 40% by Friday’s close. Financing the AI buildout was already expensive. It’s now getting more expensive by the day.

Tariffs Add Another Layer

Trade policy hasn’t taken a break either. Washington imposed new 10% tariffs on Indian imports this week, citing forced-labor allegations, even as New Delhi continues pressing for a bilateral trade agreement. It’s a smaller story than the capex reckoning in tech, but it fits the same pattern — every corner of this market is being asked to justify itself against a less forgiving macro backdrop.

The Takeaway

What’s forming here isn’t a single crash narrative but a broader repricing of patience. Investors spent the last two years rewarding the promise of AI; they’re now demanding proof it can pay for itself before the debt comes due. With Moody’s openly flagging credit risk, Treasury yields at multi-year highs, and even crypto rejoining the risk-off trade, balance sheet quality — not growth stories — is what will separate the winners from the casualties when Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta report in the days around next week’s Fed decision. The golden AI narrative isn’t dead. It’s just being asked to show its math.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Best regards,
The StocksToday.com Editorial
