The Picks-and-Shovels Trade: Power, Chips, and Crypto’s Hardware Reckoning

Dear readers,

Friday’s close above 7,800 marked the S&P 500’s 27th record of the year, and cooling US inflation gets much of the credit. But records are backward-looking. The more interesting story this week is what investors are buying instead of what they’re celebrating: a decisive rotation away from software promises and toward the physical plumbing of the digital economy. Compute and the power to run it have become the real bottleneck — and the most coveted asset class for anyone following the shovel-sellers of this particular gold rush.

Washington’s Executive End-Run

Crypto’s legislative path in Washington has all but closed. Galaxy Research now puts the odds of the CLARITY Act clearing Congress in 2026 at just 10 percent, down from 75 percent as recently as May. A cramped Senate calendar starting mid-September and an unresolved fight over stablecoin yields have squeezed the bill nearly out of existence. Into that vacuum steps the executive branch: President Trump is set to host the CEOs of Coinbase, Ripple, and Robinhood at the White House this coming Wednesday. For investors, the message is clear — sweeping legislation isn’t coming this year, but targeted regulatory carve-outs from the SEC or the White House will increasingly set the tempo for crypto assets instead.

Asia’s Land Grab for Power and Silicon

The monetization of digital scarcity has fully migrated into heavy industry, and Asia is where it shows most vividly. Energy conglomerate Envision is building a two-gigawatt compute campus in the Chinese desert region of Ulanqab, powered entirely by renewables. Meanwhile, traditional electronics and energy firms are reinventing themselves for the AI era: Hongxin Electronics is constructing what amounts to a “token factory” in Wuxi built on Huawei clusters, and Langkun Technology has launched a subsidiary specifically to convert biomass-generated green power directly into AI compute capacity. The lesson for investors chasing blockchain and AI exposure is that software-only analysis now falls short — evaluating energy access and hardware capacity has become just as essential, since the availability of cheap, green electricity is what will determine future margins.

Nvidia Buys Its Own Ecosystem

Nvidia’s latest quarterly disclosures reveal just how aggressively the dominant chipmaker is locking down its customer base. The company assembled a $50 billion equity package to buy stakes in key partners — roughly $30 billion into Intel shares and another $21 billion into SpaceX, which went public in June. The deal comes with strings attached: starting in August, SpaceX committed to buying its hardware exclusively from Nvidia. This is Nvidia moving beyond its role as a supplier and toward something closer to a vertically integrated technology conglomerate, deploying its enormous cash reserves to lock in future revenue and physically shut competitors out of its supply chain.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

MicroStrategy’s Index Exit Becomes a Warning Shot

Index provider MSCI is planning to remove MicroStrategy from its Global Investable Market Indexes in November, and the stock reacted immediately, sliding to $93. That matters because many institutional investors have treated MicroStrategy as a liquid proxy for Bitcoin exposure. If the exclusion goes through, roughly $2 billion in passive selling could hit the stock — entirely mechanical, and entirely disconnected from where Bitcoin itself is trading. The takeaway for crypto portfolios is blunt: leveraged proxy stocks carry index risk that spot ETFs simply don’t, and that risk can strike with no relationship to the underlying asset’s price.

Berkshire’s Vote of Confidence in Big Tech

Even the market’s most famously price-sensitive investor is buying into this infrastructure story. Berkshire Hathaway’s latest portfolio filing shows a $17 billion increase in its Alphabet stake over the quarter, pushing the position to nearly $37 billion and making it the conglomerate’s third-largest holding. When a firm as valuation-disciplined as Berkshire commits capital at this scale to Big Tech, it lends real weight to the idea that the market is starting to treat these massive infrastructure buildouts as fundamentally sound investments rather than speculative excess.

The Takeaway

The macro data — this week’s soft retail sales chief among it — still argues for caution. But Wednesday’s White House meeting will be the real test of how much political momentum the digital infrastructure industry can generate heading into the fall. For investors, the throughline across all five stories is the same: capital is moving away from abstract software bets and toward the concrete assets — power, silicon, and hardware contracts — that will determine who actually captures the value crypto and AI are creating.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Best regards,
The StocksToday.com Editorial
