The Inflation Stalemate Sends Capital Hunting for Cover

Dear readers,

Wednesday’s inflation report was supposed to give the Federal Reserve — and the market — a clearer sense of direction. Instead, it delivered a stalemate: prices are neither cooling fast enough to justify easing nor accelerating enough to force the Fed’s hand. That ambiguity is already reshaping portfolios, pulling capital out of pure AI-hardware bets and into software, cybersecurity, and precious metals — anything with a defensible cash flow or a physical backstop.

Core Inflation Won’t Budge, and Neither Will the Fed

July’s consumer price index rose 3.4 percent year-over-year, landing exactly where economists had forecast. Falling gasoline prices offered a bit of breathing room, but core inflation — stripping out food and energy — held steady at 2.5 percent, refusing to move in either direction. Real wages are actually going backward, with average hourly earnings failing to keep pace with the cost of living. The CME FedWatch Tool now puts the odds of a 25-basis-point hike in September at 52 percent — a coin toss that leaves aggressive rate-cut bets dead for now. For portfolios, the practical effect is straightforward: compounding, quality, and predictable earnings are commanding a premium again, while anything priced purely on hope is getting a harder look.

Software and Cybersecurity Step In as Chip Stocks Wobble

That premium is visible in the tech sector’s internal rotation. Major semiconductor and hardware names have given back ground after their AI-driven run, while what might be called defensive tech is quietly outperforming. The iShares Expanded Tech Software ETF has climbed a solid 12 percent over the past month. Cybersecurity is doing much of the heavy lifting: Palo Alto Networks is up roughly 97 percent year-to-date, and CrowdStrike has gained approximately 80 percent. The appeal is structural, not sentimental — recurring subscription revenue and high gross margins are proving a sturdier hedge against rate uncertainty than the boom-bust cycles of chip demand.

AI Infrastructure: Genuine Growth, Genuine Skepticism

Even within AI, the market is starting to separate substance from story. Cloud provider Nebius Group blew past analyst estimates with revenue of $582.3 million, a 454 percent jump year-over-year that sent shares surging by double digits in pre-market trading. CoreWeave reinforced the case for real demand with an order backlog now standing at $104 billion. But not every number is landing well: a reported $500 billion Nvidia financing plan, said to involve residual value guarantees on chips sold to customers, is drawing pointed criticism over how much risk is quietly being pushed off balance sheets. The takeaway for investors is blunt — blind enthusiasm for anything labeled “AI” is no longer enough. What matters now is hard cash flow and clean financing structures, not backlog announcements alone.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palo Alto Networks?

Silver Edges Toward a Breakout

Uncertainty is also pushing capital into precious metals, and not just the usual suspect. Gold has stabilized near $4,400, but silver is drawing the sharper analyst interest. Citi has set a $110 target for the second half of 2026, pointing to an acute shortage of physical silver available for immediate industrial delivery — a call that implies substantial upside from the current level around $65. The shift underlying that forecast matters: investment demand, not industrial use, is becoming silver’s primary driver. For investors looking to hedge against sticky inflation and the risk of a policy misstep, that makes silver a higher-beta alternative to a straightforward gold position.

Crypto’s Regulatory Autumn Comes Into Focus

Away from equities and metals, the crypto market is bracing for a decision point of its own. Public Bitcoin miners have already sold nearly $1.78 billion worth of holdings this year, but the more consequential action is in Washington. The SEC and the CFTC are each advancing their own regulatory frameworks, and the Senate is scheduled to vote on the CLARITY Act on September 15. Having already cleared the House, the bill now needs 60 votes in the Senate to lock in a permanent framework for digital assets. For crypto investors, that calendar date matters more than this week’s price action — it’s the event that will determine whether institutional money treats the asset class as settled law or ongoing risk.

The Takeaway

Nothing in Wednesday’s data forced the Fed’s hand, and that’s exactly the point: with the picture still murky, the market is pricing in patience rather than conviction. Software and cybersecurity are winning because their revenue doesn’t depend on the next rate decision. Silver is winning because it offers a hedge that gold alone can’t match. And AI infrastructure is being re-rated company by company, with backlog and balance-sheet quality replacing blind faith in the theme. Until the Fed offers a clearer signal, resilience — not growth at any price — remains the trait investors are paying up for.

Best regards,
