Marvell Shares Rebound as Sector Sentiment Shifts — But the Real Test Arrives in October

The market’s mood toward Marvell Technology has shifted abruptly this week, with shares climbing 5.6 percent on Friday to trade at 189.74 euros. The bounce comes without any company-specific catalyst, instead tracing back to a familiar force in the AI chip trade: the gravitational pull of rival Broadcom’s earnings.

Broadcom delivered quarterly results on Wednesday that cleared the bar with room to spare. Adjusted earnings came in at $3.32 per share against expectations of $3.24, while revenue reached $29.59 billion. The standout figure, however, was a 221 percent surge in AI semiconductor revenue to $16.7 billion, alongside guidance of $34.8 billion for the current quarter. For investors positioned across the AI infrastructure complex — a cohort that includes Marvell — such numbers serve as a powerful reminder that demand for custom silicon and networking chips remains red-hot.

The relief rally, though, only partially repairs the damage from roughly a week earlier. When Marvell reported its own fiscal second-quarter results last Thursday, the stock tumbled around 10 percent despite what appeared to be a textbook beat. Revenue climbed 37 percent to $2.739 billion, adjusted earnings reached $0.94 per share, and the company raised its full-year revenue outlook to approximately $12 billion from a prior $11.5 billion. The data center segment, now the engine room of the business, grew to $2.17 billion — representing 79 percent of total revenue.

So why did investors bolt? The answer lies less in the numbers themselves and more in what they didn’t say. Marvell guided to roughly $18 billion in revenue for fiscal 2028, but attached a softer tone to that projection, and the market grew restless over the timeline for the company’s much-hyped custom chip partnership with Google. Reuters attributed the negative price reaction to these twin concerns: a weaker-than-hoped outlook for fiscal 2028 and lingering uncertainty over when the Google collaboration would translate into hard revenue.

That dynamic has created a peculiar tension in the stock. On a 12-month basis, Marvell remains one of the standout performers in the semiconductor space, up 147 percent. Yet the shares now sit roughly 6 percent below their 50-day moving average of 192.44 euros — a technical signal that short-term momentum has cooled even as the longer-term narrative stays intact.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Marvell Technology?

Wall Street’s response to the earnings print was notably split. Craig Hallum raised its price target aggressively from $217 to $300 while maintaining a buy rating. TD Cowen nudged its target from $225 to $245, though with a more cautious tone. B. Riley Financial, meanwhile, trimmed its target from $345 to $315 but held firm on its buy recommendation. The median analyst target sits near $284.80, implying roughly 38 percent upside from the post-earnings close, with estimates ranging widely from $143 to $400.

Goldman Sachs analyst James Schneider, surveying the landscape after both companies reported, offered a telling distinction: he expressed greater optimism toward Broadcom than Marvell. That comparative framing underscores how much of Marvell’s near-term trajectory now depends on external sentiment rather than company-specific news flow.

The next genuine inflection point arrives on October 6, when Marvell hosts its investor day. Management is expected to address the Google custom-silicon partnership directly — specifically the timing of production ramps and revenue contribution. Until then, the stock appears caught between a short-term recovery and the structural questions hanging over its growth story. For investors betting on the AI infrastructure buildout, Marvell offers exposure to a deeply embedded player in the ecosystem — but one whose share price has lately been dictated more by what competitors say than by what the company itself delivers.

That dynamic speaks to a broader shift in how the market evaluates AI chipmakers. As expectations have become increasingly front-loaded into valuations, merely beating estimates no longer suffices. Investors are now demanding evidence of acceleration — proof that the next chapter, whether Google’s custom silicon or other pipeline opportunities, is materializing on schedule. Marvell’s record quarter was, by any historical measure, a success. The market’s lukewarm response says less about the company’s execution than about the exacting standards the AI boom has imposed on the entire sector.
