Lufthansa’s Multi-Front Squeeze: New MRO Leadership, Stalled Index Bid, and a Fuel Bill That Won’t Cooperate

The airline’s shares have spent the past month drifting lower, but the forces weighing on the stock extend far beyond the trading screen. Lufthansa enters the autumn season navigating a leadership transition at its most valuable maintenance arm, a mediation process with its pilots, and an external environment — from border-control bottlenecks at its home hub to surging crude prices — that shows little sign of easing.

At the operational heart of the group, Harald Gloy has been appointed to take the helm of Lufthansa Technik. The 54-year-old, who has served as chief operating officer and accountable manager on the subsidiary’s board since 2022, will assume the role of chief executive on 1 February 2027. He succeeds Sören Stark, who is retiring at 59 after a tenure that saw the division expand its global MRO footprint. The supervisory board, chaired by Grazia Vittadini, has handed Gloy a five-year mandate.

The timing of the succession is telling. Lufthansa Technik posted a solid first half of 2026 — revenue climbed 11 percent to €4.4 billion with operating profit of €315 million — yet margin pressure is mounting as cost inflation bites across the maintenance sector. Gloy inherits a business with momentum, but one where the easy growth tailwinds have faded.

Meanwhile, the group’s labour front is showing tentative signs of movement. Vereinigung Cockpit and Lufthansa management met this week in Seeheim for their first session with mediators Bodo Ramelow and Roland Koch. Union president Andreas Pinheiro, who represents roughly 9,600 pilots, described himself as “cautiously optimistic” after the talks. The union is pressing for higher employer pension contributions on behalf of around 5,000 pilots. Cabin crew negotiations with UFO are scheduled to resume next week, with the union’s leader Joachim Vázquez Bürger framing the discussions as an opportunity to rebuild trust.

That dual-track negotiation — cockpit and cabin — carries real financial weight. Past strikes have already cost the group a three-digit million-euro sum, and investors remain wary of further disruption even as management bandwidth is stretched across multiple fronts.

The share price reflects the prevailing caution. At €7.82, the stock gained 1.3 percent on Friday following a close of €7.72 the previous session. Yet the 30-day picture is far less flattering: a decline of 9.8 percent, with the shares trading roughly 24 percent below their 52-week high of €10.27. The relative strength index sits at 40.4 — not yet oversold, but indicative of persistently weak momentum.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lufthansa?

JPMorgan analyst Harry Gowers, who hosted a roadshow in Milan, views the demand environment as supportive of the group’s full-year targets. The bank nonetheless maintained its “Neutral” rating with a price target of €7.50, a level that implies modest downside from the current quote.

Adding to the broader narrative is the group’s latest miss on the index front. For the third consecutive review, Lufthansa failed to secure a return to Germany’s blue-chip DAX index. When the September reshuffle takes effect on 21 September, Hugo Boss and Ströer will swap places between MDAX and SDAX, OHB moves into the TecDAX, and Cancom exits — while Lufthansa remains on the sidelines. The snub is symbolic, but it underscores how far the carrier’s standing has slipped from the days when a DAX berth seemed assured.

External headwinds are compounding the picture. At Frankfurt Airport, the EU’s transitional arrangement for the new Entry/Exit System (EES) expires on 6 September, and Fraport is warning of transit queues stretching up to 90 minutes. Lufthansa and Condor have criticised the absence of a functioning app — a nationwide rollout is not expected before 2027, with the federal police still in testing phase. For a hub-and-spoke carrier, every minute of additional border processing time translates into missed connections and frayed customer relationships.

Fuel costs add another layer of strain. Brent crude traded at $95.67 on Thursday, marking a weekly gain of 7.1 percent — the sharpest such advance since mid-July — as US-Iran tensions and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz rattle the market. For an industry where kerosene represents a substantial share of operating costs, the trajectory is unwelcome regardless of how well the core business performs.

The constellation of pressures — a stalled index bid, operational friction at the group’s primary hub, an oil price moving the wrong way, unresolved wage disputes, and a leadership handover in a key division — suggests a carrier fighting on multiple fronts simultaneously. The market’s verdict, for now, is one of measured caution rather than alarm.
