Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Discount Widens: Transfers, Takeover Plans, and a Stock That Keeps Falling

The arithmetic is becoming uncomfortable for Metaplanet shareholders. The Japanese company’s equity now trades at roughly 0.90 times the net asset value of its Bitcoin holdings — meaning the market values the entire operating business at less than zero. And with the average purchase price of those coins sitting above the current market rate, the paper losses on the treasury are mounting.

On Friday, the stock fell about 8 percent to EUR 1.55, pushing the weekly decline to nearly 10 percent. That leaves the shares 68 percent below their 52-week high of EUR 4.82, reached in September of last year, and down 30 percent year-to-date.

Custody Moves Keep Spooking the Market

The recent turbulence traces back to a series of large Bitcoin transfers that began in mid-August. CEO Simon Gerovich moved 5,014 BTC between the company’s own addresses on August 14, and later confirmed it was purely a custody operation — not a sale. The total holding of 43,000 BTC remained unchanged.

But the market’s nerves were tested again in late August when Metaplanet shifted roughly 4,800 BTC to Coinbase Prime in three tranches: 1,000 BTC on August 25, 1,350 BTC three days later, and a final 3,000 BTC on August 29. Gerovich again moved to quell speculation, describing the transfers as custodial adjustments rather than disposals.

The repeated clarifications have done little to settle investor anxiety. Every movement of the company’s Bitcoin reserves is now scrutinized as a potential signal — a dynamic that underscores how completely the stock’s valuation has become a function of its crypto treasury rather than its underlying operations.

A Nasdaq Vehicle in the Works

Amid the transfer drama, Metaplanet is pushing ahead with its US expansion. The company has signed a binding agreement to acquire Nasdaq-listed Super League Enterprise, contributing 2,100 Bitcoin and USD 2.5 million in cash in exchange for roughly 95.7 percent of the target. The entity is slated to be renamed Superplanet, with the transaction expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Cantor Fitzgerald lent its backing to the plan on August 24, reaffirming an Overweight rating and a USD 2.80 price target.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

The Balance Sheet Tells a Harsher Story

The half-year results for 2026, published on August 18, laid bare the cost of the Bitcoin-heavy strategy. Metaplanet reported net sales of JPY 4,944 million but booked a substantial loss of JPY 182,874 million — driven primarily by a large accounting write-down on its Bitcoin holdings. The impairment reflects mark-to-market pain rather than realized sales, yet it highlights how violently the company’s financial statements can swing with cryptocurrency prices.

A Stock That No Longer Tracks Its Own Catalyst

Curiously, the recent recovery in Bitcoin — fueled by speculation over a Federal Reserve pause — has failed to lift Metaplanet’s shares. While the cryptocurrency gained ground, the stock headed lower, suggesting that company-specific concerns and broader risk aversion toward leveraged crypto plays are outweighing the positive macro signal.

The picture is further complicated by a filing Gerovich submitted to Japanese financial regulators on Friday, disclosing changes to his personal shareholding following the exercise of new share options. The report’s effective date was August 28.

Volatility as the Only Constant

For investors, the risk profile remains extreme. The annualized 30-day volatility stands at 79 percent, while the relative strength index at 54.4 points to a market without clear directional conviction — neither overbought nor oversold.

The stock did manage a 4.5 percent gain to EUR 1.69 on Thursday, and over the past 30 days it has climbed 41 percent. Yet even that recovery leaves the shares down 24 percent since the start of the year.

Until Bitcoin rises decisively and sustainably above Metaplanet’s average acquisition cost, the discount to the underlying treasury is likely to persist. The recent price action suggests that despite management’s assurances and a confirmed balance sheet, investors remain deeply skeptical — and every administrative transfer, no matter how benign, risks reigniting that doubt.
