Inside Amphenol’s Great Shareholder Divide: Who’s Cashing Out of the AI Connector King

The quarterly filings landed quietly, but they tell a story that revenue figures alone simply cannot capture. For Amphenol, the connector maker riding the artificial intelligence wave, the second quarter of 2026 delivered record numbers — yet beneath the surface, institutional investors are positioning themselves in sharply divergent directions.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. built a position of 39.2 million shares from virtually nothing, a striking vote of confidence in the company’s AI infrastructure trajectory. Sixth Street Partners followed a similar playbook, acquiring 7.4 million shares out of thin air. Capital International Investors and T. Rowe Price Investment Management each expanded their holdings by roughly a fifth.

The buying, however, tells only half the story. Fidelity Management & Research shed 8.9 million shares, trimming its stake by more than 11 percent, while Bank of America cut its position by over 20 percent. In a particularly telling twist, one T. Rowe Price entity exited its Amphenol position entirely — even as another arm of the same fund complex added shares. That internal contradiction within a single investment house underscores just how divided opinion has become over the stock’s fair value.

Insider Selling at a $200 Million Clip

The institutional crosscurrents are matched by a conspicuous pattern among those closest to the company’s operations. Over the past 90 days, Amphenol executives — including the chief financial officer and the presidents of the Communications Solutions and Interconnect & Sensor Systems divisions — have sold shares worth more than $200 million. Not a single insider purchase offset those sales.

To be clear, insider selling alone rarely signals distress; executives diversify their wealth for any number of personal reasons. But combined with the retreat of certain large shareholders, a coherent picture emerges: those with the clearest view of the business are choosing to lock in gains at current valuations rather than add to their positions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amphenol?

The Fundamentals Remain Formidable

None of this diminishes the underlying story. Amphenol reported second-quarter revenue of $8.8 billion, a 55 percent jump year over year, with adjusted earnings per share of $1.35. The order book stood at $10.7 billion, suggesting demand for data center and AI server connectors has yet to peak. Acquisitions contributed to the surge, but the company’s guidance for the current quarter — revenue between $9.3 billion and $9.4 billion — signals that organic momentum from AI infrastructure buildout remains firmly intact.

The 2-for-1 stock split completed roughly a month ago has done nothing to alter those economics. It simply doubled the share count and halved the nominal price. Shareholders also have a dividend to look forward to: $0.25 per share, payable October 14, 2026, to holders of record September 22, 2026. The company’s willingness to maintain its payout while investing heavily in capacity and acquisitions speaks to the cash flow underpinning its growth strategy.

A Stock Trading on AI Sentiment

The market’s verdict on Amphenol is best captured by its volatility profile. With an annualized volatility of 41 percent over the past month, this is no longer a steady compounder — it trades as a leveraged bet on the durability of the AI capex cycle. The stock closed Friday at €71.67, up 1.5 percent on the day and 5.3 percent over the week, though the 30-day picture shows a 4.8 percent decline. The relative strength index of 56 points to a market in balance, with neither buyers nor sellers firmly in control.

Goldman Sachs weighed in Tuesday with a reiterated buy rating and a $204 price target, arguing the AI and data center demand reflected in the Q3 guidance still leaves meaningful upside.

At a market capitalization of roughly €340 billion, Amphenol now sits among the true heavyweights of electronic connectivity. The question for investors is no longer whether the company benefits from the AI boom — the second-quarter numbers settle that debate. The real question is whose time horizon you share: the new institutional buyers positioning for a multi-year cycle, or the insiders and fund managers taking profits while the valuation remains rich.
