Alphabet’s AI Ambitions Gain Ground Through Apple Partnership

New insights into the collaboration between Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and Apple reveal a significantly deeper integration than previously understood. The core of this expanded alliance centers on Apple securing comprehensive access to Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence model, a move that substantially extends the reach of Alphabet’s AI strategy beyond its own ecosystem of products and services.

Financial Performance Provides Solid Foundation

Alphabet’s fundamental business strength was recently underscored by its fourth-quarter earnings report. The company posted earnings per share of $2.82, comfortably surpassing analyst expectations of $2.64. Quarterly revenue reached $113.8 billion, also exceeding forecasts. A particularly bright spot was Google Cloud, which reported a contract backlog of $240 billion, marking a 55% increase from the previous quarter. This robust financial health provides a stable platform for its strategic AI investments.

The Mechanics of “Full Access”

The agreement grants Apple far more than simple usage rights to Gemini. The iPhone maker has the capability to actively adapt and tailor the AI model for integration into Siri and other native intelligence features. A critical technical process enabling this is known as distillation. This method involves transferring the knowledge and capabilities of a large, complex language model like Gemini into a smaller, more efficient version.

In this scenario, Apple’s on-device model acts as a student, learning not just the final outputs from Gemini but also replicating its internal reasoning processes. The outcome is a compact, powerful model that delivers performance comparable to its much larger predecessor while demanding significantly less computational power. This efficiency is ideal for running sophisticated AI directly on Apple devices without requiring a constant internet connection for server-side processing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Alphabet?

It is important to note that this remains a technical foundation. Siri currently continues to rely on server-based processing, and these distilled, on-device models are not yet active in consumer products.

Strategic Expansion and Market Position

For Alphabet, this partnership with Apple acts as a powerful commercial anchor, potentially transforming hundreds of millions of Apple devices into distribution channels for Gemini’s underlying technology. This dramatically expands the potential user base for Alphabet’s AI. Concurrently, Google is developing a native Gemini application for Mac computers, designed to function as a desktop AI assistant that will compete directly with offerings like ChatGPT and Claude. A specific launch date for this application has not been announced.

Market analysts maintain a positive outlook on Alphabet’s stock. The consensus rating among experts is “Strong Buy,” with an average price target of $380 per share. Bank of America has set a price objective of $370, indicating significant potential upside from current levels, contingent on the Gemini-Apple partnership delivering its anticipated commercial impact.

Despite the strong fundamentals and strategic moves, Alphabet’s shares have declined approximately 10% since the start of the year and are trading notably below their 52-week high of 291.60 euros. The realization of the commercial potential from the Apple collaboration is widely viewed as a key factor for the stock to recapture its previous highs.
