Amazon’s $25 Billion AI Bet Secures Decade-Long Cloud Anchor

The race for artificial intelligence supremacy is increasingly being fought with checkbooks. Amazon.com Inc. has made one of the largest strategic plays in the sector, committing up to $25 billion to AI developer Anthropic. This colossal investment is far more than mere venture capital; it is a masterstroke designed to lock in over $100 billion in future spending for Amazon’s own cloud infrastructure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), over the next ten years.

Market reaction was swift and positive. Amazon’s stock gained 3.48 percent on Tuesday, closing at 217.05 euros and bringing its recent 52-week high back into view. The share has surged nearly 20 percent on a monthly basis. Analysts have been quick to endorse the strategy. KeyCorp raised its price target to $325, while BofA Securities lifted its valuation to $298, forecasting that the Anthropic deal alone could add roughly $1.3 billion in quarterly revenue to AWS.

A Two-Pillar Partnership

The expanded alliance is structured in two parts. An initial $5 billion investment is being made at an Anthropic valuation of $380 billion. The remaining $20 billion is contingent upon the startup hitting future commercial milestones. In return, Anthropic has committed to spend more than $100 billion on AWS technologies in the coming decade, with a focus on utilizing Amazon’s proprietary Trainium and Graviton processors.

This commitment secures Anthropic up to five gigawatts of computing capacity for training its Claude AI models on Amazon’s chips. Analysts see this as a powerful endorsement. Truist’s Youssef Squali noted it provides clear evidence that Amazon’s Trainium chips are gaining significant market share in AI applications. The deal also integrates their platforms, granting AWS customers direct access to Anthropic’s Claude console through their existing accounts, simplifying development workflows.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

Fueling the Custom Silicon Engine

The partnership throws a spotlight on Amazon’s rapidly growing custom chip business, a segment often overshadowed by its cloud and retail operations. CEO Andy Jassy recently stated the tailored chip division has doubled its annualized revenue run rate to over $20 billion. The next-generation Trainium3 chip offers a substantially better price-to-performance ratio and is reportedly nearly sold out through mid-2026.

This massive commitment to Anthropic is part of a dual-track AI investment strategy. Earlier this year, Amazon also announced an investment of up to $50 billion in ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. By positioning itself as a central financier to leading AI labs, Amazon directly fuels demand for its core cloud infrastructure.

All eyes now turn to Amazon’s upcoming financial results. The company is scheduled to report first-quarter earnings on April 29, 2026, targeting net sales of up to $178.5 billion. During the accompanying analyst call, management will need to detail how these enormous upfront investments in AI infrastructure are impacting AWS’s near-term margins. BofA analysts anticipate a strong 28 percent year-over-year growth rate for AWS, driven by new AI workloads.
