Amphenol’s Post-Split Arithmetic: Decoding the 53% Drop That Wasn’t

The most striking number attached to Amphenol’s stock right now — a 53% decline over the past month — is also the most misleading. What looks like a dramatic sell-off is, in fact, the mechanical residue of the connector maker’s two-for-one share split, which was distributed on September 2 with the ex-date following a day later. Every holder of a single share now owns two at half the price, a technical adjustment that leaves the company’s roughly €339.77 billion market capitalization untouched.

Morningstar is leaning into that distinction. The research house has framed the post-split price distortion not as a red flag but as an entry point, arguing that the operational substance of the business — its industry-leading margins and technological edge in connectivity — is entirely separate from the chart noise generated by the increased share count. Strip away the split mechanics, the analysts suggest, and the investment case comes into sharper focus.

The market showed early signs of agreement on Friday. The stock traded at €71.20, up 1.1% from Thursday’s closing level of €70.40, a modest but telling bounce after weeks of split-induced turbulence. The relative strength index sits at 18.6, deep in oversold territory, though that reading owes more to the split adjustment than to genuine capitulation. With annualized volatility running at 154%, the post-split trading data will likely remain erratic until the market fully digests the new share structure.

A Valuation Debate Beneath the Technical Noise

Remove the split distortion and the real argument emerges: Amphenol trades at a price-to-earnings multiple above 40, a premium that has divided observers. One analysis suggests the stock could be undervalued by as much as 58.3%, pegging fair value at $192.12 against a pre-split closing price of $80.04. Others counsel restraint, pointing to the concentration of AI-related optimism already embedded in the share price.

The fundamentals provide ammunition for both camps. Fiscal 2025 delivered record revenue of $23.09 billion and net income of $4.27 billion, reinforcing Amphenol’s reputation as the margin leader in its peer group with what analysts describe as excellent capital allocation. The company’s connectors are integral to data centers, networking equipment and high-performance computing — precisely the infrastructure layers where AI investment is concentrating.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amphenol?

Analysts have responded with buy ratings and an average price target of $197.22, spanning a range of $170 to $230. On a split-adjusted basis, those targets translate to roughly half their nominal value, a conversion investors will need to keep in mind as the new share count takes hold.

Insider Selling and the AI Demand Question

The bear case rests on two pillars: valuation and insider behavior. Reports indicate insiders have sold approximately $172 million worth of shares, a signal that some market participants interpret as a cautionary note. At a multiple above 40, even a moderate cooling in AI capital expenditure cycles could trigger an outsized correction — growth stocks carrying premium valuations tend to react disproportionately to disappointed expectations.

The bull case counters that Amphenol’s positioning is structural rather than cyclical. The company is regarded as a technology and profitability leader in its segment, with the highest operating margins among its comparables. Should AI infrastructure demand persist — and the record 2025 results suggest it has momentum — the revenue trajectory has room to extend. The split itself adds a further dimension: a lower per-share price improves accessibility for a broader investor base and enhances liquidity, factors that could provide medium-term support.

The Next Catalyst

The coming quarterly report will serve as the first genuine test of whether the record 2025 performance can be replicated. That disclosure will show whether the AI-driven demand for high-end interconnection technology remains intact or whether the caution voiced by some analysts about the durability of AI spending proves warranted.

Until then, Amphenol presents an unusual duality: a company whose operating quality and valuation discipline are pulling in opposite directions, wrapped in a share price that has been artificially distorted by its own capital structure. Investors separating the two — the split mechanics from the underlying business — will find the cleaner picture. Those who conflate them risk mistaking arithmetic for analysis.
