Arafura Rare Earths Pins Its Hopes on an October Deadline as Nolans Moves From Paper to Pickaxe

For a developer that has spent years answering questions about whether it can fund its flagship project, Arafura Rare Earths has just delivered its most emphatic response yet. The company has locked in more than A$930 million in equity commitments and now describes itself as fully funded through to the completion of construction at the Nolans rare earths mine in Australia’s Northern Territory.

That declaration — made during a Friday earnings call — carries particular weight given the company’s history of investor anxiety over repeated capital raisings. Management has explicitly stated it does not anticipate another equity injection, shifting the debate from balance sheet survival to operational delivery.

A New Finance Chief Arrives at a Pivotal Moment

The funding push coincides with a change at the top of the finance function. Angela Bigg has taken over as chief financial officer, stepping into the role just days before the results call — timing that underscores the intensity of the current phase. The company is working toward the contractual close of its project financing for Nolans, targeted for October 2026, with the settlement of strategic equity subscriptions expected to land in the same window.

For shareholders, that convergence of milestones makes the coming weeks the clearest test yet of whether Arafura can execute on its promises. Practical completion of the mine, meanwhile, is not expected until the end of 2029, meaning the value creation story remains years from fruition even as construction gets underway.

Wider Losses, But a Transitional Narrative

The financial results for the fiscal year ended 30 June 2026 show a widening net loss alongside higher other income — a combination that might alarm investors in a mature business but carries less sting for a company pouring capital into a greenfield project. Arafura framed the period as a transition from development into the construction phase, a characterisation that fits the operational picture: earthworks have begun at Nolans, with full construction scheduled to start in September 2026.

The growing loss is, in many respects, the cost of progress. With no production revenue yet flowing, the company is spending ahead of earning — an unremarkable state of affairs for a project developer at this stage, though one that demands patience from those holding the stock.

Geopolitics Lends a Tailwind

The timing of Nolans’ construction start could hardly be more favourable from a strategic standpoint. Chinese rare earth suppliers have reportedly halted some shipments to the United States amid escalating geopolitical tensions, according to Reuters. That dynamic is pushing Western buyers to scour for supply chains that bypass China, giving alternative projects like Nolans an increasingly receptive audience.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Arafura Rare Earths?

Regional authorities in the Northern Territory have also taken notice, with Nolans listed among the major projects entering the construction phase this quarter.

The Market Remains Unconvinced — For Now

Yet the share price tells a different story from the operational one. The stock has been caught in a persistent downdraft, trading at €0.1172 in recent sessions after a 2.2 percent decline on the day. Year-to-date losses stand at roughly 23 percent, and the shares sit a staggering 62 percent below their 52-week high of €0.3100 set in mid-October.

The equity is also trading well beneath its 50-day moving average of €0.1310, signalling continued near-term weakness. A 30-day volatility reading of 54 percent underscores just how jittery trading in the stock remains.

This divergence between corporate milestones and market performance is a familiar pattern for project developers in capital-intensive construction phases. The dilution from substantial equity raises weighs on valuations, as does the long road to production — even when management insists the funding is secure.

A Defining Few Weeks Ahead

The immediate catalyst rests with the October contractual close of the project financing. Should that land as scheduled, it would validate management’s funding assurances and potentially begin to close the gap between operational reality and market perception. Until then, the stock appears likely to remain at the mercy of sentiment rather than substance — a dynamic that has punished holders all year even as the company’s foundational work has proceeded.

For those willing to look past the quarterly noise, the equity raise and the no-further-capital guidance represent a meaningful de-risking of the Arafura story. The true test, however, lies ahead: whether the October deadline is met and whether construction proceeds without the cost overruns that have plagued so many mining projects before it.
