AST SpaceMobile Shares Plunge Following Severe Analyst Downgrade

Shares of satellite communications firm AST SpaceMobile are experiencing a sharp sell-off today. The catalyst is a severe rating cut from Canadian investment bank Scotiabank, which has issued a new price target of just $45.60. This represents a potential downside of over 50% from the previous day’s closing price, with the bank’s analyst calling the current valuation “irrational.”

A Market Reassessment Underway

The market’s reaction was swift. After closing at $97.49 on Tuesday, the stock opened significantly lower today, shedding as much as 8% in early trading. This move abruptly halts a rally that had seen the shares gain more than 30% in the initial trading sessions of 2026.

Scotiabank analyst Andres Coello drove the negative sentiment by downgrading the stock from “Sector Perform” to “Sector Underperform.” The core of his critique centers on significant operational delays. The bank now projects that AST SpaceMobile will not generate its first substantial free cash flows until 2028 or 2029. The report also highlights a slow pace of customer acquisition in crucial markets, including the United States and Japan, all while the company faces substantial capital expenditures.

Underlying Financial and Insider Concerns

This analyst skepticism aligns with recent fundamental weaknesses. The company’s quarterly results from November 2025 fell well short of expectations, underscoring the challenges:
* Earnings Per Share (EPS): -$0.45 (Consensus Expectation: approximately -$0.21)
* Revenue: $14.74 million (Consensus Expectation: approximately $22 million)

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASTeMobile?

This financial performance has been accompanied by notable insider selling activity. Major shareholder Tower Corp (American Tower) slashed its position by roughly 91.5% in December 2025, offloading 2.29 million shares. The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Huiwen Yao, also sold shares during the same month.

The Daunting Competitive Landscape

A further critical point raised by analysts is the immense competitive gap. Rival SpaceX’s Starlink network holds a commanding lead. While AST SpaceMobile has launched seven satellites since 2017—the most recent being “BlueBird 6” in December 2025—Starlink deployed over 3,160 satellites in 2025 alone. Industry estimates suggest AST SpaceMobile requires approximately 50 satellites in orbit to offer a continuous service, a goal it aims to reach by the end of 2026.

Given these execution risks and the capital-intensive path to profitability, the stock’s current valuation is coming under intense scrutiny. Many observers now consider a price-to-book ratio of 29.1 to be excessive, prompting a rigorous market reassessment of the company’s prospects.

My roots lie in Cologne, where I was born and raised. Early on, my curiosity about economic topics and international developments sparked my interest in journalism. After completing my studies, I began my career as a business editor at a respected German trade publication.
