BASF’s Rally Faces a Two-Sided Story: Coatings Windfall Meets JPMorgan’s China Warning

The chemicals giant is enjoying its best stretch in years, with a blockbuster asset sale, a raised profit forecast and a share price that keeps grinding toward record territory. Yet beneath the surface, a prominent Wall Street voice is telling investors the good times may not last.

JPMorgan analyst Chetan Udeshi reaffirmed his “Underweight” rating on BASF this week with a price target of €40 — a level that sits roughly 22 percent below where the stock is currently trading. The Frankfurt-listed shares changed hands at €51.42 in afternoon trading on Tuesday, up 0.82 percent on the day, as the DAX powered past the 26,000-point mark to a fresh all-time high.

The China Conundrum

Udeshi’s caution centers on intensifying competition from Chinese exporters, who are already hitting record shipment levels in several product categories. His core argument: the favorable pricing and pull-forward effects currently supporting BASF’s results are merely masking — not eliminating — the medium-term headwinds that lie ahead.

The broader macro picture gives that thesis some weight. The International Monetary Fund projects China’s private sector debt will reach 323 percent of economic output by 2026. Beijing continues to invest more than 40 percent of GDP while growth runs at just 4 to 5 percent, prompting economists to debate whether the country is heading toward “Japanification.” For export-oriented German industrials like BASF, that scenario cuts both ways: weaker Chinese demand on one side, more aggressive Chinese competitors fighting for market share elsewhere on the other.

A Windfall Quarter

The market, however, has so far brushed aside those concerns. BASF’s shares have climbed 15.73 percent since the start of the year and sit just 6.59 percent below their 52-week high of €55.05, set in mid-April. The chasm between the current price and JPMorgan’s €40 target underscores just how far apart the bank’s view is from the market’s current enthusiasm.

Part of that optimism traces back to a transformative second quarter. BASF completed the sale of its Coatings division to Surventis on June 30, pocketing €5.8 billion while retaining a 40 percent stake in the business. The transaction generated a post-tax disposal gain of €3.5 billion and net cash proceeds of €5.6 billion.

Even excluding that windfall, operations delivered. EBITDA before special items jumped 53.6 percent year-on-year to €2.4 billion in the second quarter, and net income for the first half came in at €5.07 billion. Management responded by lifting its full-year guidance to €6.9–7.7 billion in EBITDA before special items, up from the previous range of €6.2–7.0 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

The stock’s reaction was muted but positive: shares closed Monday at €51.00, up 0.91 percent, leaving the year-to-date gain at 14.79 percent and the distance to the April high at 7.36 percent.

Cost Discipline Down to the Last Detail

The Coatings sale is only half the story. BASF’s cost-cutting drive at its Ludwigshafen headquarters has reached levels that border on the granular. The company’s fleet of works bicycles — used by employees to navigate the sprawling ten-square-kilometer site with its roughly 2,000 buildings — has been trimmed from 13,000 to 11,000. No new bikes are being purchased; the existing fleet is simply being maintained. The detail reflects a larger shift: headcount at the site has fallen below 30,000, the lowest level since the 1950s.

For investors, it signals that cost discipline is embedded not just at the corporate level but deep into operational minutiae.

The Rhine Risk

One factor that could weigh on future quarters came into focus this week: low water levels on the Rhine. Simon Gerards Iglesias, an economist at the German Economic Institute, flagged falling river levels as a tangible cost driver for industry. Roughly 80 percent of Germany’s inland shipping runs along the Rhine, and viable alternatives are scarce — replacing barge transport with trucks for fuel alone would require around 3,000 tanker lorries per day.

For BASF, whose Ludwigshafen site sits directly on the river and depends heavily on waterborne logistics for raw materials and finished products, low water levels represent a recurring operational risk that can pressure costs regardless of underlying business momentum.

A Mixed Picture From the Sector

Comparisons within the industry offer a nuanced read on BASF’s position. Evonik, the Essen-based competitor, grew adjusted EBITDA 24 percent to €630 million in the second quarter, with organic sales up 14 percent on equal contributions from volume and price. But net profit fell 31 percent to €84 million. Evonik confirmed its full-year guidance of €2.0–2.2 billion in EBITDA and has already cut 700 jobs this year.

That combination — operational improvements alongside persistent margin pressure — mirrors the dynamic at BASF. The question hanging over the stock is whether the current pricing environment and the Coatings windfall represent a genuine inflection point or merely a temporary reprieve before the Chinese competitive wave arrives. With JPMorgan’s target sitting so far below the market price, that debate is unlikely to be settled anytime soon.
