Bitcoin Plunges Below Key $100,000 Threshold as Bear Market Fears Intensify

Bitcoin has tumbled below the psychologically significant $100,000 level for the first time since June, with prices collapsing to approximately $99,300 on Wednesday. This represents a decline of more than 20% from October’s record peak, leading numerous market observers to declare the official onset of a bear market. The dramatic sell-off has left investors grappling with uncertainty and fear.

Market Sentiment Plummets to “Extreme Fear”

The Fear and Greed Index, a key barometer of cryptocurrency investor sentiment, has nosedived into “Extreme Fear” territory. This shift in mood stems from several converging factors. A strengthening US dollar is diminishing the appeal of speculative assets like Bitcoin. Concurrently, growing ambiguity surrounds potential interest rate cuts from the US Federal Reserve, dashing earlier investor hopes for a more accommodative monetary policy. Compounding these issues, the ongoing US government shutdown is draining market liquidity and exerting additional downward pressure on digital asset valuations.

On-Chain Metrics Flash Warning Signals

Blockchain data reveals that sellers have firmly taken control. For the first time in six weeks, the volume of Bitcoin held on exchanges has increased—a classic indicator that investors are preparing to liquidate their holdings. Simultaneously, Bitcoin miner reserves have dropped to their lowest point since mid-2025, suggesting many mining operations are being forced to sell assets to cover operational expenses.

Perhaps most alarming is the 26.1% decline in active Bitcoin addresses since the beginning of November 2024, with the figure now standing at just 872,000. Analysts interpret this trend as evidence of retail investors exiting the market. Furthermore, long-term holders moved approximately 405,000 BTC during the past month, likely to secure profits. Collectively, these on-chain developments point toward substantial selling pressure across the ecosystem.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bitcoin?

Glimmers of Hope Amid the Downturn

Despite the prevailing pessimism, several positive developments offer potential catalysts for recovery. BlackRock is advancing preparations to launch its iShares Bitcoin ETF in Australia, a move that could streamline regulated Bitcoin access for institutional investors. On the technological front, initiatives like the Lightning Network continue working toward faster, more cost-effective transactions to resolve Bitcoin’s scalability challenges.

Trading volume has surged to $117.84 billion daily, potentially fueled by the market turmoil itself. The derivatives market experienced massive liquidations that further accelerated the price decline. Bitcoin’s total market capitalization currently stands at $2.02 trillion.

Market participants now await clarity on whether Bitcoin will establish a support level at current prices or face additional downward movement. While some analysts characterize this correction as a healthy market consolidation, others caution that further losses may materialize given persistent macroeconomic uncertainties. The coming weeks will prove decisive in determining whether the $100,000 threshold can be reclaimed or if the bear market is merely in its initial stages.
