Cheesecake Factory Inc. (CAKE) experienced significant selling pressure this week, with its stock value declining more than 10% over a seven-day period. This downward movement occurred despite the restaurant chain reporting better-than-expected earnings, highlighting investor concerns about other aspects of the company’s financial performance.

Financial Results Present Contrasting Picture

For the third quarter of 2025, The Cheesecake Factory delivered adjusted earnings per share of $0.68, substantially exceeding analyst projections of $0.60. The company’s operational performance showed notable strength, with adjusted net profit margins reaching 3.7%, surpassing management’s own guidance.

However, total revenue of $907.2 million fell short of the $912.95 million forecast by market experts. Comparable sales at the company’s flagship brand increased by a modest 0.3%, indicating challenges in driving customer traffic and spending.

Restaurant Operations Show Improvement Amid Challenges

Across its portfolio of brands, The Cheesecake Factory demonstrated operational improvements. Restaurant margins expanded throughout all concepts, with Flower Child showing particularly strong progress—its margins increased by 140 basis points to reach 17.4%.

The company maintained its expansion trajectory, having opened 19 new restaurants so far in 2025. Management anticipates reaching 25 new locations by year-end, with plans for up to 26 additional openings in 2026. Financial stability appears solid with $556.5 million in available liquidity, and the company continues to distribute shareholder dividends of $0.27 per share.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Cheesecake Factory?

Analyst Community Responds With Downgrades

Financial institutions quickly adjusted their positions following the earnings release. Wells Fargo reduced its price target from $60 to $55 while maintaining an “Equal Weight” rating. Barclays took a more bearish stance, cutting its target to $48 and assigning an “Underweight” recommendation. Even typically optimistic firms like Raymond James revised their expectations downward, moving from $70 to $60.

The cautious outlook appears driven by management commentary pointing to a “softer consumer environment” and persistent inflationary pressures, particularly in beef costs. These forward-looking statements seem to have outweighed the positive operational results in investors’ assessment.

Technical and Fundamental Headwinds Emerge

From a technical perspective, the stock has established a clear downward trend, trading below key moving averages that typically provide support. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, management guidance suggests revenue could decline by approximately 1% compared to the third quarter.

The critical question for investors is whether The Cheesecake Factory’s expansion strategy and operational efficiencies can overcome concerns about consumer sentiment. The company’s ability to navigate these challenges will become clearer with the next quarterly earnings release, which will indicate if current strategies are sufficient to restore investor confidence.
