Deutz Brass Put Money on the Table as Engine Maker Runs a Two-Track Growth Play

The optics could hardly be better timed. Just as Deutz pivots toward defence hardware with its €1.6 billion acquisition of FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau, the people running the show are backing the strategy with their own cash.

Supervisory board member Patricia Geibel-Conrad picked up 8,000 shares on 28 August at an average price of €12.8893, a transaction worth roughly €103,000. She follows chief executive Sebastian C. Schulte, who bought stock worth €983,089 earlier in the month at prices ranging between €9.70 and €10.10. Insider purchases of this sort have long been read by the market as a vote of confidence in a company’s strategic direction.

That vote arrives at a moment when the Cologne-based engine maker is juggling two distinct growth narratives. The FFG deal, which won shareholder approval with 99.7 percent support just over a week ago, shifts Deutz firmly toward military land vehicles and special-purpose vehicles. FFG counts the Bundeswehr, NATO forces and Ukraine among its customers, and its owning families are set to become anchor shareholders in Deutz with a stake of up to 29.9 percent.

Alongside that transformation runs a quieter but no less significant initiative in the company’s traditional civilian heartland. Deutz has struck a strategic partnership with India’s Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited to develop a shared 1.6-litre engine platform, with Deutz’s international sales and service network slated to support the collaboration. The move signals that management intends to keep nurturing its compact-engine business even as the defence pivot reshapes the group’s identity.

The operational numbers provide a solid foundation for both bets. First-half revenue climbed 10.7 percent to €1.1 billion, while EBIT jumped 43.1 percent to €79.7 million. The EBIT margin improved from 5.5 to 7.1 percent, and order intake surged 28.7 percent to €1.3 billion — evidence that demand remains robust through the corporate overhaul. Management has confirmed its full-year guidance of €2.3 billion to €2.5 billion in revenue and earnings between €150 million and €200 million, expressing confidence in reaching the upper end of that range.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?

The share price has been a study in momentum and jitters. The stock closed Thursday at €12.44, up 2.4 percent on the day, yet that still leaves it 3.1 percent lower over a seven-day stretch — a sign that the post-FFG-approval rally has cooled somewhat. The monthly picture remains strongly positive at plus 27 percent, and the year-to-date gain stands at 46 percent. At €12.75, the shares sit just 1.8 percent below their 52-week high of €12.98, having recovered 73 percent from the November 2025 low.

That recovery has not come without turbulence. Thirty-day volatility of 46 percent underscores how edgy trading in the stock has become, while a relative strength index of 68.9 points to an ambitious run that stops short of overbought territory. The market’s nervousness is understandable: investors are weighing a transformational acquisition against a still-unfolding integration, with the cartel office having already cleared the FFG transaction and closing expected by year-end or early next year.

The Kirloskar partnership offers a fresh operational reference point beyond the FFG storyline. For investors, the takeaway is that Deutz is not simply placing a single bet on defence demand — it is simultaneously reinforcing its civilian engine franchise through international alliances. The insider buying adds a further layer of conviction, even if the supervisory board member’s late-August purchase has already been widely discussed and is unlikely to move the needle on its own.

The next milestone comes on 5 November 2026, when third-quarter results are due alongside an analyst call. By then, the market will have a clearer read on whether first-half momentum has carried through and how far the FFG integration has progressed. For now, the combination of a strengthening core business, a strategic leap into defence and executives who are willing to put their own money behind it all gives investors a coherent — if volatile — story to track.
